Ever have to post bond for yourself?

A friend and I went camping about a month ago. I got a ticket because I did not have a park permit on my truck. At the time, I thought, whatever no big deal, life goes on. RIGHT…

I arrived home after a long weekend of camping out and shooting at pheasant and I could not find the ticket. I said, screw it, they will mail me a letter advising me what my fine is and I will just pay it off at that time.

The letter I got was a failure to appear notice and a warrant for my arrest.

So, tonight I had to go to my county clink, turn myself in, and post my own bond. I was in jail for about 3 hours. It sucked.

If you should ever get a ticket for being in a state park without a permit, dont wait for a letter. I know this is one mistake I will never make again.

Wow, what a story slakjaw.

If one gets a ticket in Cook County, by not appearing, one admits guilt, and nothing else. The fee becomes due after that.

Sorry about that slakjaw.

I spent two hours in the county jail once.(Swearing in the presence of a woman and in a courthouse.)
Luckily, my sister had just won 200.00 at Bingo and bailed me out.
Longest two hours of my life.

Would being cuffed & in the back of a patrol car count? Finally, they got the radio message that they really did have the wrong guy. Hell, I'd been trying to tell 'em that! One of those "wrong place-wrong time" scenarios. They did say they were sorry...

Never been arrested, cuffed, or indicted.

I do have a friend (Bob from the drunk stories thread) who got busted with pot in his dorm room in community college in Tyler Texas. Rather than show up for his court date, he skipped town and headed back home to Illinois.

I forsee him taking a family vacation about 10 years from now and getting pulled over for speeding in Texas...

I got cuffed when they clipped me for DUI in NJ. Cops were very cool and we talked about guns all the way to jail. Once there, they uncuffed me and let me sit out in the waiting room, totally unattended, brought me a Coke, told me they had about 45 min. of paperwork to do (since I refused a breathalyzer) and then they drove me home. If not so expensive, it wouldn't have been a bad experience at all.

Rick,

Did you lose your license and how bad were the costs?

Rick, in NJ, if you refuse a breathalyzer is it the same as admission of guilt? It is in KS.

I lost my driving privileges in NJ for 6 mos. When all was said and done, it was a $5k night of drinking. But that was a tiny slap on the wrist compared to what would have happened, had I been a NJ resident or had this happened in VA (where my license is). Then it would have been a good $15k-$20k. Part of my deal with the prosecutor was that the paperwork would never leave NJ and in 5 yrs. it hasn't reached my insur. co. either. Very lucky.

Matt, refusal in NJ means your guilty. But then you might get a chance to cut a deal with the prosecutor. In my case, since I was very nice and friendly to the cops, they wrote a nice note about me on the report, which made the prosecutor offer me a sweet deal. In VA, I'm pretty sure refusal cannot be used as evidence of guilt and certainly not as proof.

Drago, I had jury duty in fed. court in Alexandria in Sept. That judge made it very clear that anyone who blew off jury duty would be picked up by fed. marshals and hauled into his court to answer why (with jail and fines too). He later told us the story of how he helped change the law in VA so that EVERYONE except the governor (since the gov. may later get a pardon petition) was eligible for jury duty. Gawd, he was a hard-a$s. Sure am glad I didn't blow that one off.

Well that's just great Rick.

This wasn't a federal court, just county.

I once had to bail a girlfriend out of jail. Cost me $1,000. Needless to say, I never saw a dime of it afterwards.

5 or 6 times during my "teenage crime spree" over 20 years ago.

IMO, bailing never teaches anyone a lesson. I had to learn the hard way by sitting in LA County for 4 months. I had no problems "on the inside", but was warned by the others that I was not the type to be there, and I would have problems if anyone saw me there again.

In all it was a horrible way to learn a life lesson. On the inside I learned more than I imagined about the other side. Something that has always stuck in my mind was the guy with an artifical leg who made his living smuggling drugs into the jail. In my 4 months I witnessed him pass through three times, each time bringing in the goods and taking out a butt load of cash in his hollwed-out leg.

I simply have no sympathy for ANYONE who goes in twice. If someone doesn't learn the first time spending some time, they never will.
