I just pissed off a close relative

My cousin sends me a pic of her toddler. I think I met the kid about a year ago but really can't recall. So I complement the child saying how cute she is. Cousin writes me back in a cold tone that the kid is a boy and his name is Luke.

The kid's got no teeth, is wearing a red jumper in the pix and is sporting a Prince Valiant hairdo. I bet a pediatrician would've been fooled too. Either dress him in blue or cut off that ridiculous crop. Not my fault I thought he was a girl. You think my cousin will forgive me?

In your defense, as a pediatrician, I can´t imagine how many times I have been wrong and it seems this is a very sensitive toe for most parents (at least mothers). I guess they figure - if not even a professional kids doctor can tell, then my little boy really must look feminine.

The editor of the local (small-town) paper published a pic on page 1 of two small cherubs, one of whom was identified incorrectly from the point of view of their sex. Momma Bear was not happy. At least you didn't screw up before several thousand people (Until you posted it here! )

Happens with dogs too. Almost everyone that meets my Golden Retriever pup (last one too) assumes it's female. Wonder if the same would happen with a rottie.

Woman comes to work to show off her cute androgenously-clothed baby and everyone wants to know if it is a boy/girl. Woman leaves in a huff because everyone is trying to sexually stereotype her precious little one.

Guess she forgot her meds that day.

if i had my way , i would call baby's shemale, as that covers both aspects, however i think i might get my eyes scratched out if i did that...

calling critters "it" works , because they never figure it out , and wonder , did he just call my baby "it" ?!?! , but by the time they do figure it out , i'm long gone..

Must be fun when the parents answer "Pat" (can be Patrick or Patricia), "Sam" (Samuel or Samantha), "Jo" (Joann, Joan, Joseph, etc.), etc.

Then there's ethnic names that you'd have no frippin' clue about. Those have to be fun. . . "What's the kid's name?" "Sanjay". Ummm. Okay. That's easy to figure out. How 'bout "Qizhao" or "Palizo" or "Asatur" (all one's I've heard). "Lee" is another good one. Can be a first name, a surname, a middle name and male or female.

No wonder doctors have you fill out all that stupid paperwork.
