The new Supremes: the handwriting is on the wall

Yes, Oregon's "Death with Dignity" law was upheld, but look who the dissenters were -- the same activists that Alito will (probably) join. Big government types who think the Federal government belongs in the doctor-patient relationship.

Supreme Court Upholds Oregon Assisted Suicide Law
Bush Administration Sought to Punish Doctors Who Helped Patients Die

By ADRIENNE MAND LEWIN

Jan. 17, 2006 — Rejecting the Bush administration's argument that doctors should be punished for helping terminally ill patients die, the Supreme Court today upheld Oregon's physician-assisted suicide law.

In a 6-3 vote, justices said a federal drug law does not override the 1997 Oregon law used to end the lives of more than 200 seriously ill people. New Chief Justice John Roberts backed the administration, dissenting for the first time.

Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for himself, Roberts and Justice Clarence Thomas, said that federal officials have the power to regulate the doling out of medicine.

----------------------------

So the power of the Federal government appears destined to grow under the SC when Alito joins.

Will somebody explain to me how this trend is "conservative?"

Scary. We have a law approved twice by the voters of OR with safe guards against abuse and the 3 conservatives (about to be 4) vote against it?

I haven't seen much about the dissenting opinion, I'd like to hear their reasons.

And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. [4/16/04]
And so we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. [4/5/04]

10th? How about all but the 2nd?

There are some of us who believe the allegation that Dubya recently said: the Constitution is 'just a g-d piece of paper.'

How about Barbara Boxers quote; "The constitution reminds me of the my favorite dress in elementary school. It was wonderful, but it just doesn't fit anymore."

You and I both know that the Federal interference in Oregon is more clearly a violation of the 10th amendment than the 2nd. Very few liberals are comfortable with the 10th amendment.

Of course, as I've noted the neo-cons are hardly conservative, and never have been. They are a variety of socialist.

My bad. It was Ellen Tauscher, D California

"The Constitution was never meant to be the only set of laws that we follow. I had a blue dress when I was five, but I can't wear it because it doesn't fit me anymore. There are lots of things that change over time and you have a whole bunch of legislation enacted every day, every month, every year that adjusts and calibrates to the times and to the issues...what is perceived to be the best thing for the American people...and these are called laws, and, you know, I think they've been doing a pretty good job."

That's true. Amazing how a group morphed from "Keep the goverment out of my business" to; "Keep the goverment in everybody elses business."

Fascism is a form of socialism. Since the US government has been more or less fascists, in a uniquely North American form, from the Roosevelt period onward, the neo-cons didn't have to look far to move from their Trotkyite communism to neo-conservatism. Running the world is their goal, and they don't care which -ism gets them to it.

Their web site, Project for a New American Century explains their whole plan completely. These PNAC'ers are dangerous crackpots, but because they're in the White House, something must be done about it.
