Home Defense Rounds

O.k. folks, with all the talk about guns recently on this board, you have gotten me to thinking about home defense rounds. I'm really in a quandry. There seems to be no end to the 9mm Parabellum vs. .45 ACP debate, but I want to explore options beyond those two. Cost isn't really a factor, as I load my own and even cast my own bullets. I'm hoping for some guidance here. I thought a photo of the three choices (two mentioned above) that I have it narrowed down to might help you help me. Which would you choose?

357Sig seems to be the "hot ticket" right now. If I were really worried about it, I think that's how I'd go.

If they enter your home and you choose to shoot, kill them...Choose ammo that projects this intent.

My plan: Shoot them with the cheap .40 CCI ball ammo I use for target practice.......about 6 times. Then admonish them very sternly for entering my home and gettting blood on my carpet. I don't have any 'defense' rounds.

I think these topics are silly. Put 3 rounds in the 10 ring with a 9mm and you will have a corpse. It ain't gonna matter to much what load you are pushing.

(I am obviously at least a little full of ****, because you notice I shoot a .40 and not a 9mm )

i have 124g jhp in 9mm for the "just in case" scenario. 115g or 124g 9mm fmj for range.

But i hope to never shoot anyone...bad or good.

165gr .40SW JHP's here. Remi 11-87P 12ga in case things get uglier i.e. major disaster scenario occurs. M1A .308 coming soon in case things get even uglier than that...

How ugly are you are planning on things getting? If you see an ark, guns won't help the situation.

For home defense, use factory loads ONLY!

First, while most handloads work everytime, it has been know to have a dud with reloads.

Second the ACLU would go ballestic with "you are making your own bullets, then waiting for someone to break in the house so you can shoot them...

A 12 gauge is probably the best home defense weapon, followed by the .45. 9mm is too light and bounces around too much. Goes through walls and hits things you do not want hit, like your family or the gas tank of the car in the garage. The .45 auto is a fat slow round and slows down fairly fast after the first impact. It also puts down almost anything it hits, like crooks.

Personally I usually put a "snake shot" round (small version of a shotgun shell) in the first hole, followed up by hollow points. This way if your grandmother goes to the wrong house at 3 in the morning and does not stop when you yell because the battery in her hearing aid is tits up, the first shot will not kill anyone. If it is a crook, the second shot will put them down.

I'd use a little lighter load than 00 Buck. Those things will go through lots of walls. A heavy bird shot will not penetrate too many walls, but will knock down a perp.

For hand guns, look at the magtech rounds. They are P+ and use small amounts of shot contained in a plastic casing. I use these in my very small pistols since they are under powered (25 and 32 ACP).

For the rest, I like PMC Starfire or Corbon JHP. Both have very good reputations for proper expansion. You will need to pratice a bit with Corbon, since they have a bit more recoil than Standard FMJs.

IMO

If I were to choose a home defence round. I would pick something that would not go through a wall and hit a family member or friend.

This rules out the Mosan 7.62x54.....

I think I pick the 12 gauge with #5 turkey loads.
