Unless you're in really thick traffic, I don't see driving normally as a huge hazard. A US two-lane road (not limited access) lets you determine a safe speed, with safe passing zones.
On a packed limited access highway, I could see difficulty and even danger trying to get into a passing lane to go by someone doing 10+ less than everyone around them. The person doing the limit won't be at fault, and likely won't even be involved in the hypothetical accident. Nevertheless, it sucks to even be the indirect cause of an accident. |

Interesting to see what the liberals on board are really made of...If the shoe was on the other foot, I assure that I wouldn't be wishing them ill will, on the contrary, I would be helping out in any way possible...As I made crystal clear, my objective was not to lie or attack the officer's integrity, my objective was simply to attack the fact finding and hope beyond hope that the officer wouldn't show, there was a technicality, or simply that the court would realize that in light traffic the 90mph that I was cited for wasn't that big of a deal...Again, I made my intentions crystal clear...I was and am prepared to take responsibility for my actions.
I am part German and part American Indian...Driving and riding fast is in my blood and is my birthright..:)..The laws are to be obeyed, regardless, of my ability (never been in a crash, highly trained and capable driver), and it is my Christian duty to obey them...As speeding (extremely cautiously I might add/never street racing) is against the law, I play I pay...This is one of the last of my vices, this one is a hard one to let go of...I live to drive and drive well, I drive with the utmost courtesy on the road and care for my fellow travelers...Taking my own life in an accident isn't my fear, it is endangering another's that frightens me...This is why I drive a car with Brembo brakes, razor like steering and acute responsivness. Once again, I made my intentions crystal clear...I, obviously, would not like the insurance companies to ding me, nor the state that uses the road as a revenue stream, nor do I feel obliged to satisfy the politicians' habit of money-lust and the motivations to spend and squeeze out as much as possible from the taxpayer...I like to speed, I just don't like to pay the piper when the piper is running a racket...Do speed laws save lives?...Yes (debatable)...Are they designed to satisfy the enviros, politicians and to control the stupid?...Yes. Interesting how concerned the leftists on board are when they continue to elect and re-elect the worst kind of criminals to high office...From Bill Clinton to Al "no controlling legal authority" Gore, to John "I am a traitor" Kerry, to Ted "f@#$ Mary Joe" Kennedy, to Robert "KKK" Byrd...Their schadenfreude only speaks to their lack of character and petty mean-spirited core...I would never wish the same ill-will on them...never. |

Surely, you jest, Janus. I think LA and SF are the only places in the US with worse traffic than we have here. Driving the speed limit on the Beltway here is most definitely dangerous. It's either impossible because of traffic, or it's very dangerous when there's light traffic because everyone is going at least 75-80. The fools who go 55 very much so endanger others. Speed limits are a complete joke and only exist for pols to shake us down when they need money. They have nothing whatsoever to do with safety and everything to do with getting money. I speed with a very clear conscience. If I ever drove 55, I'd feel guilty and irresponsible. |

Re: safety vs. speed
Some people have been arguing that speed limits are arbitrary and have nothing to do with safety.
Even if going faster doesn't increase the risk of an accident happening (debatable), the kinetic energy involved in the accident is proportional to the square of the speed at which it happens! For those of you who don't understand what that means: crashing at 85 mph means your car (or body) has to absorb twice as much energy before coming to rest compared to if you were going 60 mph at impact. That alone is enough for me to keep my speed sane and a nice distance to the car in front of me. / J |
