First Generation Holodeck
I kid you not. Only a hundred 3d pixels can be displayed so far - but obviously when they increase the resolution and color palette, this will rock mightily. Here is the blurb...
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=683 By creating plasma in open air with lasers, Japanese scientists are working on a true 3D display The Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) announced an exciting breakthrough in optoelectronics -- a working three dimensional display. The display does not rely on any sort of optical illusion or disorientation. Instead, infrared lasers are aligned to converge and create small amounts of plasma. The plasma acts as a floating "dot" on top of the laser grid. The infrared laser pulses across several reflectors so that 100 dots can be created per second. The initial reports from AIST are a little light on details, but it appears as though the plasma dots can be drawn up to several meters away from the laser source. It also appears as though the device needs a vapor source with specific electron/ion content in order to generate the dots. ![]()

Let's see 100 points would be a 10x10 grid.
1000 points would be a 10x10x10 grid. We need a few more pixels.

You know something funny?
I came across one of my first 'modern' computers the other day. An IBM 286. Not the AT. Just the 286. Lit it off. Got the DOS prompt. Geez. Had forgotten most everything. Had a 60KB hard drive. Total. Yes, that's Kilo, not Mega. Looking at that machine from this side it's a joke. But back then it was hot stuff. I started off in college working with an IBM with a card sorter, and a machine that occupied a large room. Later on, from the 286 standpoint looking back at it, IT was a joke. That holodeck is not far off now. Just waiting for that positronic relay to be invented. I used to wonder why '7 of 9' never went to the holodeck. Then it hit me. A woman like that, you don't need no holodeck fantasy. Just some candles and wine. I'm sending my GF some roses tomorrow. In case the holodeck thing is still a ways off.

Jared....
If it's a fantasy, and there are no repercussions, I wouldn't need the isolation of the Fiji beach. Times Square at lunchtime on a sunny summer Sunday. If Scarlett, Jessica and Diana are the ones, I'd want everyone to know. Just once, I'd like to upstage that Fabio-looking guy wearing only the tighty whiteys and the boots playing the guitar.....

What the name of god's green earth was her Husband thinking? Why would he want to hit anything else?
I do find it funny that as time went by, each series added hotter and hotter chicks in tighter and tighter clothing.

I gotta agree with Sing. Today I saw a 5" black and white TV for $24.99. I remember when I was about 10 (42 years ago) my mom bought a B/W TV about the same size (actually a 10" screen) for $100. With inflation that thing should have been costing about $1,000, not $24.99.

Holodeck morals question...
I posed this awhile back at a party... Is there any type of 'fantasy' that should be prohibited in a holodeck? Why?

I've thought about that very question many times. If you could be in some type of ultra-realistic virtual reality, would rules be necessary? My first, freedom-loving answer is no. I think I will stand by that "no". But imagine- once things get to be THAT realistic, and you go around doing god-knows-what in an alternate reality of sorts, couldn't you end up mixing realities and acting out in real life? Or perhaps you would become so addicted to the most likely superior experience of lawless virtual reality that you would cease living in real life for anything other than basic sustenance to keep your body and brain functional for use in the alternate reality. If I could play god in a truly realistic virtual reality, why would I need anything other than 20 hours/week minimum wage?
Think about it- I still say its my choice to do what I want, and this should not be regulated, but MAN, this would require some extraordinary self-discipline to harness for good. |

Interesting question, yes.....
I think I would have in my fantasy software that anyone using a cell phone in a restaurant would require transport to a medical facility to have it removed from the elementary canal. Anyone restricting the flow of traffic in the freeway of the future would require transport to a medical facility to have their rear view mirror removed from their elementary canal. Hillary would require transport to have John Kerry removed from the elemen....... naw, that goes to TMI, doesn't it. Naw, I don't see any need for restrictions, after all, it IS my fantasy.
