Angry Rebuilding JEEP Cherokee engine?

Anyone here ever had a rebuild done on a Jeep Kj Cherokee Limited (3.7L V6)?

What's the typical cost to having this done?

Lot less cheaper than a 911 rebuild I'm sure.

Garage
There are plenty of super low-mileage Jeeps sitting in wrecking yards, totaled from collisions and rollovers. Just go buy a low mileage longblock and swap.

That's what I was going to do with my Cherokee transmission until I realized the OBDII unit was throwing bogus codes, and the trans was just fine.

Just curious- How many miles are on it?

Jeep's 4.0 straight six is known for going several hundred thousand miles without a hiccup. This is the last year they are building them. I'm wondering if the new engines can last as long.

Dantilla, he has the old V-6 which is not a very good engine at all. I wonder how much work it would take to replace it with the I-6?

I think the 3.7 is the new version based on the 4.7 V-8 (OHC, etc.), the 3.9 was based on the 5.2 (318, all iron). KJ Cherokee = Liberty in the US.

LOL! My bad. I was thinking of the old Cherokee with that crappy AMC V6.

Ummm...no. '84-86 Cherokees had a GM 2.8 V6 which is a crappy engine. 4cylinder power with V6 fuel economy and a bad habit of spinning bearings.

'87-2001 Cherokees had the tried and true classic AMC 4.0 straight six, one of the best engines ever made. The Liberty is a Jeep in name only, uses mostly Chrysler parts and has a Chrysler engine, hence the original poster's need of an engine rebuild in a five year old (or less) truck. My folks got 300K on the original AMC engine in their '87 Cherokee and have 170K on their 1999.

To me, Jeep will die when the last Wrangler with the straight six leave the assembly line this year. Much like Porsche died when the last 993 came off the line.

My first Jeep was an old YJ Wrangler I bought from an insurance auction. I pieced it back together good enough to go abuse around the mountains.

I thought when the six went belly-up, I'd drop a small-block Chevy in it's place. Had no idea you can't kill that stout old I-6. Great engine.

I agree totally!
Except for some of the '91-'95 4.0L I-6s with piston slap from the factory (rectified in '96 with engine block ribbing, etc.).
But I love my '92 XJ 4.0L Cher. Laredo 4x4, 5 spd...slight piston noise and all.
Acres 'n acres of smooth torque.

WydRyd, I have no info for you other than searching a salvage yard...sorry.

a remanfactured is around $1,500 without install.

other than that the engine is usually good enough for a wham bam good enough inexpensive rebuild.
