I don't understand equating U.S. politics of today with a comic book story written in the eighties. The story was a commentary on where the writer thought British socienty could possibly end up some day. We've seen many stories cover those themes before. I'm sure almost all of you read 1984 in high school. It's a fantasy story. It's not reality. And Natilie Portman had about as much to do with the story as I did. Zilch. She was about 5 when it was written. This is the same writer who wrote From Hell and the League of Extrodinary Gentlemen. Two more fantasy stories.

It's absolutely relevant because some ultra theistic dictatorial government is in power RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK! We have curfews, we can't say certain things (or much at all), we can't critisize the government or officials, the police are everwhere, people disappear in the night and are never heard from again.
Yeah. We have it bad right now.

The way you descibe the story I can understand why those of a certain ilk might not want to see it and denigrate the actors in it. It would be mighty uncomfortable to deal with the desire for freedom and democracy and reconcile that with blind support for your leader. You have to be in denial to make it work.

I personally liked the movie. The sequences were good and in the end good conquering evil is a great thing. Plus the whole knives thing was quite sweet. To me, a movie is just a movie. I can't wait to see what you guys say about Superman.

But being a dictatorship where citizens fear the government? I don't think were there yet. Gestapo tactics where dissodents disappear in the night and are never seen again? I don't see that happening. Rampant censorship? Nope. Curfews? Nope. Concentration or 'reeducation' camps? Nope. I think some people need to adjust their tinfoil hats a little. As for actors, I think they're almost as bad as politicians. Too many think because they're famous, that they SHOULD go spouting their opinions in public forums, and that the unwashed masses should accept their BS. They support some causes that many people see as Unamerican, then we can 'vote with our wallets'. Not likely to make a dent in their portfolios, but we can do it. I may still go see V. I will take it as PURE ENTERTAINMENT and ignore any parallels that can be drawn with what people think about our government today. What I do and would find entertaining about Miss Portman is that in this film, she portrays a revolutionary fighting against an oppressive government.... yet she is a strong supporter of gun control. She probably hasn't made the connection yet that disarming the populace of a country paves the way for oppressive governments. If y'all are really afraid of an oppressive government, buy a gun. Buy several. Oppose all efforts to disarm you. Hopefully we won't need to use them in our lifetimes... or our children or grandchildren's... but who knows what the world will be like in a couple hundred years? If we sell out our rights now, our decendants might pay the price.
