Wayne, not an idea but I just know that the engine will make a fine table stand

Jokes aside I can try to find out an old friend that use to work at BMW racing around that time to get more info.

When you find out how much do you want for one of those let me know .. I may be interested. Who knows, maybe Ricardo Patrese or Nelson Piquet drove one of those engines ....

Regards

Wonder how it would work with a BMW motorcycle frame and sidecar?

Go for it Jordi!

Very cool.

I would imagine your best bet for fact finding is to make contact with someone on the other side of the pond...(UK)...

Preferably someone within F1.

Perhaps a very friendly call to Cosworth in Torrance, CA...they are the US location with the other being in Northampton, England...someone might know someone (even though its a BMW engine its a long shot but who knows?)

Is it true that the block is from a 320i?

From what I understand the motors are losely based off the m10 motor that was in e21's and e30's. The obvious difference being the DOHC. They were chain driven which was a big bonus. And yes, they were pumping out 1500 hp but they were rebuilding them once a race.

Talk to Neil Harvey of Performance Devlopments...I believe he was on Nelson Pique's F1 team back in the day when Nelson was winning World Driving Championships.

You are going to need some awful special fuel to keep it from detonating I've read Gordon Murray describing throwing away gear boxes after a race, to trashed to rebuild due to the power/torq.

There was an article about one of those in the most recent "Motorsports" (if my memory is correct). It's known as a Group 5 BMW 320i.

Here are some other pictures...

I don't know for sure, but I remember hearing at the time that the blocks used for these engines were M10 blocks that had already done 50,000-100,000 km in a street car, not straight from the production line. The engineers wanted blocks that had been 'seasoned'.

yes they made 1500 HP
but only in Q tune
thats 3 laps not a whole race
they were run with less boost to last a whole race
and made about 1000 HP in race tune
still amazing for a 1500cc stock block
but the block is about the only stock part

maybe these guys would want them

This motor was used in the Chevron B36 Sports 2 cars. It was the highest-spec motor offered in this chassis. It is a F2-spec motor, from BMW of course. The engines displace 2L and output is about 330HP. There is an example in my shop. The engine was sent to Germany about 6 years ago for a rebuild. The cost was around $35K. A complete motor was $50K+, at the time.

I joke about swapping the motor into my E30 M3, but the intake and exhaust are opposite of the S14.

Smile F2 Motors!

These motors are the BMW fanatic's Holy Grail! .

They are to BMW racer's what the 917 motors are to Porsche racers. They are a big part of BMW Motorsports history and should go to only the most qualified Gruppe 5, IMSA 320turbo or F2 documented owners...please
