saw my cat killed tonight

Lela, our one-eyed cat, finally hit her 10th life today. A tiny pound rescue, Lela only had one eye. Not sure what happened to the other one...but from all we could tell, she'd had a pretty tough life. We adopted her from the shelter back in '00 or so...I can't remember exactly when. This evening she wanted to go out. When I lived at the house she was outside all the time (and in, and out, and in, and out...). When I moved into the apartment, since it was on the 2nd floor she rarely ventured out.

Since moving to the first floor, she wanted to go out more often, but since she always wanted to do the in/out thing, and since the door was usually closed, she didn't get her wish often. Tonight I only had the screen door closed and Lela wanted to go out. So I let her. About 10 minutes later I heard a scuffle and a woman upset. I got up to look out and saw two dogs, one on a leash and another in the street. I though Lela might be under the car parked in front of the apartment. It didn't seem that much was going on so I sat back down. Then I heard the woman start screaming, and went to the door seeing Lela run from under the car to the side yard. I walked out and found that the dog had cornered Lela, and had her in his mouth. A guy who was walking another dog was trying to help and got the dog to drop Lela but it was too late. She moved a bit, took a few breaths, then was still .

At least she went quickly. But what a violent way do go. God speed Lela. Had to tell my son and show him so he could say goodbye. Nice night...

Sorry to hear that, bud. We had an adopted stray here with us for about a year, 'til one of the local rednecks ran it over. It hurts, I know.

So sorry to hear this, too sad.

My cat is an adopted stray (she adopted me, actually) and a bit of a b!tch at times, but very loving as well. Don't know what I'd do if something happened to her.

I bet where ever Lela is now, she's got her missing eye back, and is frolicking with a ball of yarn, purring, and having a grand old time.

My condolences to you and your son.

Jim

The lady with the dogs was pretty shook up, but she should have been. Part of me wanted to kick the **** out of the dog (the neighbor upstairs said that's what he would have done), but I looked at the dog, and thought, "crap you're just doing what dogs do...her fault for not controlling you."

So sorry for your loss. Animals really do become adopted members of our families when we take them in. I look at my two cats as adopted children of sorts - they pay me back a thousand times over with the happiness they bring me. I wish you the best in dealing with this. . . So sad to hear.

Did you find the (obviously irresponsible) owner of the dog? I'd probably wring his or her neck for starters.

That is very sad news. As already said, give another stray cat a chance, in Lela's memory.
