Thinking of ditching the Harley for this

Can't stand the Harley poser culture. This looks like a fun around town, PCH summer cruiser for Lili and I. Too ostentatious, or not?

is that one of those Chinese BMW knock offs?

I heard they were pretty decent

speaking of poser culture, a month or so ago, I saw a guy and his lady wearing brand new cleaned leathers wearing earplugs on a brand new Sportster with STOCK pipes. Losers

Actually, this is an authentic Russian army replica, built in the Ukraine by Dnepr. The engine is a copy of the BMW R70 boxer.

The clown hanging on the garage wall is drawing me in...

Not a Ural, but a Dnepr. They're very close, but there are differences.

Absolutely - get it. Looks sweet. However your Harley looks pretty good too. But heck why not as long as your not ditching the P-car unless its for a Carrera GT.

Congrats!! Get that bike. I get a kick out of Thursday nights here in Florida. It is what I call Halloween Thursdays. Everyone dresses up in their finest leather and parades around town.

While not proud of this, my dad used to ride in a "gang" of sorts. He had a '55 K-Frame and was in a few tangles with some Pagans. He ended up paying them off with a big bag of weed to get them off his back.

Those were the days when bikers were bad ass, not doctors and lawyers. Most guys would piss their pants if they were in some of the crap he was in.

I guess its a good thing for Harley that they went mainstream but I still chuckle at all the costumes on Thursday nights.

There seem to be parts on flea bay all the time... so I am optimistic. These things are pretty tough, though.

Chris - funny you should mention that. I am jonesing after a new convertible so badly... but the 993 would have to go to make room

The "normal" Harleys don't bother me so much. Its the straight-pipe bikes, the television-inspired choppers, the apparel, and the 20mph-holding-up-a-long-line-of-cars riding that drive me nuts. I just see nothing positive with the experience. It's not like I'm going to be a "bro" or something.

LOL, "bro".

Buddy of mine had a Ural, only way he could get parts reliably was to contact this dude up in Washington. Interesting thing he mentioned, was that the gears (valvetrain? tranny?) all came in hand-matched sets because the machining was so inconsistent.

Don't plan on winning any races, but you'll have a lot of fun on that thing.

There's a Ural dealer up here in Motown. How's the technology on these rides? Strikes me as Yugoesque.

It's the very best 1930's BMW military bike technology available today. These are simply copies of what the Germans left behind in their hurry to leave. Poorly excecuted ones at that. These, and their cousins the Urinals, were sold here locally several years ago. I'm not aware of anyone that has been succesful in keeping one on the road. Parts are very hit and miss, with the "miss" lasting for years at times. When you do get them, as was alluded to earlier, there is typically some "minor fitting" required. What I'm trying to tell you is to stay the hell away from these things; they are just not worth it.

There are lots of cool bikes out there if you really want to get out of the Harley. Or, if you actually like the Harley (like I do) but can't stand the culture of chromosexualism that surrounds them (like I can't) there is nothing that says you have to play along. I just ride and stay away from the Yuppie RUB moron set that has gravitated towards them recently.

Get something modern and reliable, with good parts and service availability. BMW, Guzzi, Triumph, Ducati, KTM, and others make some very cool machines. Machines you can actually ride and use. Look around; just don't settle for a Russian made copy of 70 year old German technology that is sure to disapoint.
