Yes. I drove a Jetta TDI yesterday. This thing gets better mileage than the Prius, goes like ***** off a shovel, is nicely finished and has a huge trunk. All for $32K Canadian or about $28K US.

And diesel is about 15 cents per liter cheaper.

We are about to trade in the wife's SUV for the Jetta - and use this as our daily driver.

I can't fill up my 911 at the local Texaco - the pumps cut off at $45.

Not to sidetrack, but does Holland have the massive problem with uninsured that we in America do?

i don't think it's this bad, they just redid the whole health insurance thing last januari , and for the first time they made it illegal to not be insured, basic coverage does only cost a grand a year or so , and insurance cannot refuse anyone.

kids are insured by default for free, that's true

but health is pretty crappy in holland if you ask me
long waiting lists for a lot of things, and so far they prooved totally useless in any of the times i needed anything...
i'm not going to beg a dentist to please take me in as his patient , they can kiss my ass, i'll drive to belgium , and get it done instantly... and basic insurance , is that, basic.

With my P-car at my house in NC and me in Florida. I just parked my Dodge Truck and I am driving the spare Toyota truck from work. It has a 4cyl engine and should get 2X the milage of the Dodge.

Fillups are painful but no where near as bad as out European friends. I just wish we had the vehicle options you have here.

Like smaller diesel engines that get even better fuel economy.

A friend and I just drove his RV to San Francisco for a motorcycle race at Infineon. Round trip gas from OC to SF and back was about $400. Unbelievable. We calculated that in a couple years, when gas is $5 per gallon, it will cost a gray-hair around $2,500 to drive his diesel pusher one-way across the country. Wonder what all these retired people will be doing when they can't drive their RVs?

Last week (so old prices) I filled up my 10 year old Mazda 626 with regular at $3.03/gallon at 24.5 mpg, I figure about $0.12/mile for gas. With the Carrera at $3.21/gallon and 17.1 mpg, it was $0.18/mile for gas. Doesn't include any other costs of driving, just the gas. So it's 50% more expensive for gas alone to drive the pcar. Both cars were drive the same route, to and from work only that week.

VW TDIs are awesome, but that's a bit of an ass-rape price for one. When I looked a couple years ago they were ~$20k brand new, depending on equipment.

It's like they are wiping out the fuel savings w/ price-gouging on the cars.

My wife's parents have parked theirs. Sad as they'll be making payments on it forever, but can't afford to drive it.
