I am in sunglass heaven! Neighbor is head rep for maui jim = free and oakley factory is 1/2 mile away . I really like the maui jims

The Oakleys look like they should be extremely functional with full coverage around the sides and top to bottom, but I just can't get over how they look. I just don't like them. I guess the key is to buy for functionality and not appearance.

only thing missing is a light saber.. ;)

I still have my white Oakley Blades from "back in the day" when everyone at the motocross track wore them, but never wear them anymore as my daughters would ridicule me to no end. I presently wear a ten year old pair of prescription Ray Ban Aviators that the lens keep popping out of. I really should check into who else offers prescription lenses nowadays in some more modern sunglasses.

Anyone know?

bigchillcar 06-22-2007 08:14 AM

Do you realize any saving at the Oakley factory? Just curious.

Well, if you are talking about the ones I'm wearing, those were their 1st sun glass atempt:cool:

I dug out a few more pairs of my stash, still have more packed away and in cars:cool:

I remember the old Oakley BMX parts. I think I may even have had a set of grips.

So when are you going to open your BMX museum?? You've got the equipment.

I recently *splurged* on some EC-DC glasses. They were on sale at Sports Chalet and it's been years since I had a decent, not from SavOn, pair. I made a big mistake going with all plastic frame (no nose pads) as they seem to have stretched and are constantly sliding down my face. They fit well in the store. I'm gonna have to heat/bend them soon.

Costco sells shades too but nothing that I liked.

Oakley has a prescription frame and lens program. I use Oakley wire frames and my optomologist (or opthamologist) sends them to be fitted with Zeiss lenses. He has used Oakley for lenses, but feels the Zeiss are better quality. I'm partial to Oakley frames for two reasons - they last and they fit my head well.

Oakley Prescription

+1.

I really used to love my Gargoyle glasses back in the late 80's. I was sold on their shatter-proof lenses and the fact that they had better side protection than fashion sunglasses. But the style looks really dated now.

Now I buy safety glasses for sunglasses. Z87+ rated, and 99.9% UV protection.
Plus... My sunglasses can stop a .25" steel ball travelling at 150 FPS.
Can your fashion statements do that?

Well, funny you should ask. When I get the shop built in the back (a 30X40), I'm building a loft/2nd floor for my BMX stuff :D

Cool, seems silly to have as much of that stuff as you seem to have. I believe that I've read that you still act the fool on those little bikes from time to time, but you have a lot of stuff. You can't ride it all.

BTW, yes, I've seen the Oakley's that look more like regular glasses. I could wear those. It's just the stuff that's similar to what you were wearing in those pictures. IIRC the hot stuff back in the day, that I never cared much for then or now were called Blades and maybe Razor Blades.

OK, well, I spent a bunch of time on the www.campmor.com site looking around and found an inexpensive pair of polarized glasses that look like they give good coverage and come with a second set of polarized lenses. They are Hobies and only cost $30+shipping. I figure with two sets of lenses, that's like getting two pairs of glasses for $30, so I had to try. I'll probably buy a case for them to see if I can keep them in good shape longer.

Well, since I have been holding on to this stuff since the 70s, it does add up, but diffent bikes for different events.

Still the fool, notice the hair color, LOL

Sorry, I just realized I didn't type what I was thinking clearly or completely.

What I meant was more like "Cool, seems silly to have as much of the BMX stuff as you have without displaying it or something."

What I was thinking was that having it all stacked and packed away seems a shame. Someplace where you can display it and share it with others.

Sorry, without being able to read my mind, my incomplete thought came off as pretty obnoxious and I definitely didn't intend that.

I have loaned pieces out to bike shops (ones close friends own) in the past, and am not against it. There is ver very strong core of us who have cook out & mini shows that are open to all of interest. I'll have to get the Oakley Frog Skins (Ray-Ban style) out of the SC

OK, back when this thread was current, I'd ordered some Hobies from Campmor.com. They were decent glasses, and were $35, the most I'd ever spent on sunglasses. I felt decadent.

I just ordered some new glasses from Campmor. I got some Smith Advocate Polarized glasses, they were $50. I feel really naughty for spending so much. I haven't had the opportunity to wear them in the sun. They just arrived tonight, but they feel like they are going to be more comfortable on my nose, and I think they are going to give me a little more coverage than my last pair of sunglasses.

Campmor.com rocks.

GOOD philosophy!

I agree re polarized

you can pick up out of fashion styles on eBay for cheap - you need to select a good brand, quality optics

I like Vuarnets, which are out of fashion so...

Need Some New Sunglasses

I have been wearing Oakleys since I was 15. I am an old BMXer as well. Wish I would have kept my old PK Ripper or my Quadangle from those days. I have worn Oakleys, Revos, Ray Bans, which are all very nice sunglasses. But my current pair of Maui Jims are my favorite. They are also the only US owned manufacturer of high end sunglasses. Most of the above mentioned brands are owned by a company called Luxottica.
