OSX Tiger or Panther - what's the consensus?

How's either treating you? Are there any known issues? How about peripherals - any issues with those?

Also can its Mac side run on an existing wireless network set up with Windows?

We're thinking of buying one of the new Intel Core Macs and setting it into a Netware domain. Do you think this will work?

Thanks.

I'm running 10.4.6. None of the OSX versions since 10.2.X have caused any problems in my experience.

I'm on a wireless router shared with a Dell desktop with no issues.

As for the Netware compatibility, I don't have direct experience, but it looks pretty straightforward:

Tech - does 10.4.6 come standard with the new Macs, or is it a patch I have to download from Apple?

Thanks.

Tiger is rock solid. Intel boxes are friggin awesome. Just got my new 17 inch laptop. Booted my old 17 in firewire disc mode, hooked it up to the new one, hit the migration assitant, walked away and 1 hour later it had my new box up and running with all my docs, apps, preferences, bookmarks, passwords, the whole works.

Apple know how to do it right.

As a new-to-Mac person, i think you're going to be blown away by the stuff in iLife, David. All bundled for free.

Cool. Thanks, Tech. Could what Stomachmonkey described above where he loaded everything from his old Mac into his new Mac work with my Dell?

Ahh, so you have decided to go down the Mac route... Did you ever get my Linux advice (if you could call it that)?

Dave

LOL! I did. Downloaded Fedora only to find out my burner doesn't burn recordable DVDs. Heck, it doesn't even recognize them. And this is a Dell Inspiron.

I guess what I'm going to do, Dave, is download a copy of XP from one of those online software places ($60-$70) to placate what I think is my currently corrupted XP OS. I won't be buying a new Mac for a little while yet.

I think you downloaded the wrong stuff from Fedora. They have CD ISO's as well. I don't use DVD's for Linux yet.

PM'd you...
Dave

DD,

That won't work to migrate your Windows docs to the Mac. There are the OS diffs and I don't believe, could be wrong, but I have never seen a PC that can be booted to behave as an external Firewire hard drive like Macs can.

What you can do which I also did this week.

I have a work issued Dell laptop. I bring my personal Mac to work because I'm more productive. So the only thing the Dell is good for is logging onto MS Exchange. I could set up Exchange on my Mac but that means letting the corp IT guys touch it which is never going to happen.

Load up Parallels on the Mac then use a windows based migration or backup/image utllity to clone your Dell onto the Mac. That way you've got everything exactly as it was on your Dell while you get comfy on the Mac.

Stomachmonkey,
I am looking for software to synch a Mac laptop with a Dell pc and seem to have hit a wall. Apple reccommends putting all onto iDisc and transferring manually, but that won't cut it. (This is for my wife's business and she needs simplicity when it comes to these things) Do you have any reccommendations. Is this what "Parallels" is for?

Mike,

Are you looking to sync up files on a regular/recurring basis or is this a one time deal?

You can PM or email if you want.

Scott
