Almost all apps launch speed on a Mac is directly tied to the number of open fonts.
The more open fonts, the longer it takes. Have not checked to see if the Intel boxes ship with more standard system fonts than the PPC's did. Obviously not the sole reason but should be looked at as a contributing factor. Scott
