Intel Core Macs - not software ready?
Our IT person, who specializes in Macs, suggested us to not buy the new Intel Mac machines yet as very little software has been ported for the Intel/Power PC core.
She says that as is, current Apple and/or PC ported software will run on average 50% slower on the Intel Macs than on conventional Macs. I asked her about timelines as to when certain software that we use - Adobe and Microsoft - might be ready to work with the new Intel Macs, and she did not, as of now, know. I'm just passing this tidbit of information along. ![]()

bollocks.
The old stuff runs just fine. The apps will run about 25% slower than they would if they were compiled for the new platform, but considering the new processors are like 2000% faster than the old G5s, you're not going to notice a difference.

Photoshop may be an issue with large files. Just load up on RAM.
Office runs just fine as well as a host of other stuff. Scott

I have yet to meet an "IT person" who knows a thing about Macs.

I think she's giving bad advice.
Apple's own software runs native on the Intel Macs. That includes Safari, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, etc. MS Office still runs through Rosetta (the translation engine), but performance is not an issue, as the machines are more than fast enough. I believe the only major software where you might have a performance question is in really heavy-duty Adobe Photoshop use. ADBE has yet to create Universal Binaries. That's probably why AAPL's G5 PowerMac is still on IBM CPUs. Anyway, when the Universal Binary version of Photoshop comes out, it will run native on the INTC-based Mac you buy today.

I'm using all those apps, including Photoshop on a Mac Mini (intel). No problems.
How do I get a cheap copy of WinXP to install on my Mac?

Isn't there some giga-decimal code for each piece of software?
I have the original OS disc (XP) from a Dell machine that I killed. Will that work?

Or, go on eBay and buy a "OEM version" for cheap . . .
Or, find someone who has a volume license copy of Win XP, which doesn't need to be activated/registered and thus can be installed on any number of machines . . . Or just shell out the $280 for heavens sake - aren't you a prosperous doctor? J/K

You guys kill me.
The IT girl is a big, tough, loud girl who shouts when she talks. So, in person, I'm compelled to take her advice... But myself, I'm concerned only with Microsoft Word, so I'll reconsider the IT girl's advice. Just don't tell her, okay guys?

As to Moses: I wouldn't download anything from Limewire. Half of what's there is infected.
I suggest an online software store where you can download XP as an iso. file. Or ebay... Or anything other than Limewire...

Opening Word took 1 second on powerbook g4 (1.67ghz), 3 seconds on macbook (2.1 ghz duo) and 12 seconds on IBM thinkpad (1.5 ghz). She is technically correct, but she should be steering you towards MACs based on my data
![]() After opening Word they all open successive documents in 1 second.
