I'm baaaaaaack...
The normally left-leaning CA voters have smashed down prop 82 -- the socialist attempt to take over the pre-schools led by Hollywood grand-pinko, Rob Reiner. It wasn't even close 65%-35%... only the bay area seemed to opt for its passage (no surprise there!). On the congressional front, Republican Brian Bilbray defeated Francine Busby, the wacko who said publickly that "you don't need papers to vote" when asked in Spanish by an undocumented dude how he could "help" her campaign... You can always count on a lefty to self-destruct if you give them enough time in front of a camera... (remember Howard Dean?). The Dems attempt to "take back the house" is not off to a good start...

The preschool initiative I could kinda see both sides of but if it failed, so be it. No biggie to me. I think the government should stay out of the day care business. It sucks badly enough at the rest of education - no reason for them to start screwing kids up in incompetently-run dumpy slave-factories at even earlier age I guess. . .
I think the issue that trumps virtually all others in this election is illegal immigration. I know it did for me. The candidates that most actively come out against illegal immigration, for border security and against back-door paths to citizenship (or even booting the illegals the hell out of the U.S.) are the ones that get my strongest support ALMOST exclusive of any of their other positions. I can think of a few examples where a strongly anti-illegal-immigration candidate wouldn't get my vote, but the examples are pretty extreme and such a situation hasn't come up yet. Bilbray was smart (helped by the fact that Busby was an idiot) by taking such a strongly anti-illegal position. Now let's just hope it translates to results!

Bilbray won 49 to 45% in a heavily republican district. Still may not be great news for the repubs.

The whole preschool things was all about the teachers unions and brainwashing the children...The socialists will eventually have their way on this, as they keep importing poverty and offering freebies, soon enough the people will demand it. |

Bush as a benchmark of anything doesn't really apply. If Bush ran today I bet he'd get somewhere in the 30% range, almost irrespective of opponent.
Also, consider that Bush getting a majority ANYWHERE in the 2000 election broke the trend. . .

Look at party enrollment, not the way people voted. Most voters are not so myopic or stupid to always vote a party line. Most people recognize a loser sooner or later, no matter what the party affiliation.

I giggled like a school girl when I heard ole meathead's initiative was defeated. What's his batting average in politics, about .150?
If there was ever a celebrity that I held in total contempt, it is rob reiner. I have no use for that man at all. I voted against it because I don't believe it is the right thing to do, but it sealed the deal that reiner was backing it. His knee-jerk bleeding heart tax and spend attitude is indicitive of what has got california into the mess it is in. We don't need any more of it. He loves the idea of taking away from a few and giving it to the many. It was his idea to tax cigarettes like crazy to pay for propaganda against smoking! Like it is any of his buisness. Stupid health nazi. If someone wants to smoke that is their business, not his. I hate it when people decide something is right, and they want to make everyone else do it. Why can't they just do what they think it right and let everyone else make their own decision? this time he wanted to tax the wealthy to pay for the poor, like that isn't already what is happening. The wealthy already support the poor, how much more are you going to try and take? What a clown. If he ever really decides to get into politics and run for office I will donate thousands of dollars and volunteer countless hours to make darn sure he does not win. Almost everyone I know feels the exact same way. you hear that rob? if you ever get the itch, don't bother. you won't win. California doesn't want you and can't afford you. There is a reason the hippy movement died out. |

If that were the case, he wouldn't have won the electoral college. He took the majority in enough states (more than 50%) to win the electoral college. The Popular vote was different by 0.1%

![]() Thanks, that was pretty funny I was pretty surprised that 81 and 82 were defeated. I expected 82 to pass and all the people who were subject to the additional tax to move to AZ with all the businesses that have already left. I will be even more surprised if Angleides does not beat Ahnold in November, despite the fact that he has promised to raise taxes a lot if elected.

I'm for Ahhhhnold all the way. The guy has done everything he said he'd do. That's more than 99% of the career politicians out there.
AND the state is actually improving budget-wise. A far cry from his predecessor.

Yeah, funny how the headlines changed from an almost gleeful "the 'pubs are going to lose in a harbinger of the mid term elections" to a very factual "pub wins San Diego seat". I thought he was likely to lose based on guilt by assoc with what's happening in the whole congress + the local headlines. So good luck to him, and hope he keeps his nose clean.
I really am surprised that Rob Reiners prop fell over. He really has been pretty successful, and has won most of the things he has pushed. Maybe there are still enough people who don't believe in free lunches left in Kali? God, there's hope yet.

You do have a point there. . . I'm initially against the bond measure simply because I think paying down debt needs to be the priority right now, but that is a good observation.
Perhaps if/when the bond measure fails we'll see if/how he's able to work (entirely) within the balanced budget. I still think the state is better for his having taken over though and in lieu of a candidate that can offer specifics as to how he'll beat Ahhnold at that I've got to back the Terminator.
