Health Benefits of Mustard
While eating a 3 day old corny dog, about the only thing that would make it go down easier was some Mustard.
Got me thinking, is Mustard any good fer ya (cuz I can bet cash that 3 day ol corny dawg ain't!). Thought I would share some lunchtime wisdom... Mustard and Health Like most foods with ancient roots, mustard has been heralded as a curative. It stimulates appetite and digestion, and clears the sinuses in much the same way as chiles, which are said to be as effective as commercial decongestants. Mustard increases blood circulation, hence its use as mustard plaster, a dressing used to bring increased blood flow to inflamed areas of the body. Mustard flour sprinkled in your socks is said to save your toes from frostbite, a claim which is also made about cayenne pepper and other spices containing volatile oils. One of mustard's greatest health benefits is that it provides tremendous flavor for few calories and little fat. A gram of mustard flour contains just 4.3 calories and simple mustard preparations can be eaten with impunity by nearly everyone. Mustard itself contains no cholesterol, only trace amounts of vegetable fat, and is between 25-32% protein, depending on the variety of plant. Leaf mustard contains calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and Vitamin B. Just thought you should know. Now, get back to work you buncha slackdaddies!

Mustard is used in most barbecue, either powdered or basted on prior to putting on the rub. You don't taste any "mustardy" flavor once it's cooked.

Germans use mustard a lot. My ex made beef rolls and slathered the mustard on inside the roll. Never really tasted it once finished but added to the flavour.

I found a new sandwich shop at lunch the other day. I've been going every day since, 'cause they have a different meaty filling on special each day and so many bread choices it's like a whole different meal each time: taragon ham and cheese on multigrain, turkey schnitzel on a Kaiser, meatloaf on a baguette. The only commonality between all of them, asside from the veggies, is that I get a nice thick spread of Dijon mustard. Yummy!

Another mustard story:
I lived in England for a while a bunch of years ago and where I worked there was a lunch truck that came by every day. One of the things I liked to get from it was a sausage on a bun. The sausage was more than a foot long and quite tasty, but the best part was the mustard they had to put on it. Very hot! Just a light layer was enough to bring tears to my eyes. Does that make me a masochist?

I love Mustard!
Seems to be more prevelant in Europe? Certainly in Germany and in France where it is on every table and eaten with bread instead or in addition to butter...

Huge fan of mustard -- all kinds (except Dijon for some reason).
However, mustard can be very harmful to the health of the philistine who adds any to my hamburger. JP

The Tumeric in commerical Mustard improves memory and is supposed to help ward off Old Timers Disease. It is a bright yellow spice that is used in SE Asian cooking.

Anyone ever do the thing with the little smokey hot links, mustard and grape jelly? Put it in a crock pot and simmer for a few hours and life is good...
