Patents: Anyone obtained a patent and what's involved?

I have always been thinking of ideas to make things work easier and problem solving and now I have thought of a new idea for food preparation. I don't really know anything about patents or what direction I should go. I have spoken with 2 people about the idea and they can't believe somebody didn't think of it sooner. I would be able to market it to fast food restaurants and/or sell part of the idea to a large corporation like Kraft Foods.

This could help me open my car museum many years sooner which some of you know has been a dream of mine for many years, and it could give me the cash to buy more cars, automobilia and a building to house the museum.

It may be a long shot but worth a try and all or any help appreciated. Please email me if you don't want to post. Thanks in advance.

Ditto. We just covered patents in a business law class I am in, and that was the gist of the teacher's message, hire a pro. It's a long process that is anything but guaranteed, and simply having one doesn't guarantee that your idea won't get ripped off. Do you have the cash to fight Kraft in court and on appeals if they steal your product? By all means, go for it, but just be careful whom you share and market it to.
