Re: Syd Barrett Dead

This quote is incorrect:

Quote:
Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs.
It should read:

Quote:
Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs.

Yeah, I thought Gilmour replaced Syd when he went round the bend so to speak. I thought he was already dead

How sad. I have been holding out for his return for most of my life.

Keep an eye on the Yahoo story; it has been edited and re-written several times already today. They have corrected the founding memebers and added a great deal of information since this morning.

There are so many interesting stories about this tragic figure.

Apparently, in Floyd's early days, Barrett had a lot of hangers-on that were absolutely convinced that he was a trancendent genius, but only while on acid. To deal with this, they would dose his coffee, his water, his booze with LSD. This obviously had an effect on his mental well-being.

While Pink Floyd was recording "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" for the WISH YOU WERE HERE album, the first song expressly about Syd (although one could make that claim about "Fearless" as well), Syd actually showed up at the Abbey Road studios. They hadn't seen him since just before SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS had been released. Roger Waters was completely taken aback, and began crying. The band told Syd that they would finish recording this track, and he should wait for them outside the studio so they could catch up with old times. When they finished the song, Syd was gone, and they never heard from him again (as far as I know).

A good read for Floyd fans would be "A Saucerful of Secrets" by Nicolas Shaffner.

David Gilmour has sad in interviews that they bumped into one another from time to time. He also said he made sure Syd was taken care of in terms of royalties etc..

The saddest part is that he really had no recollection of ever being in the band. His bandmates were just friends to him.Shine on you crazy diamond Syd (Roger). Rest in peace.

I wore my Pink Floyd tie to work today, and then heard about Syd Barrett. And, as per the story related by CJ, I'd heard that the track they were recording became probably the best Gilmour solo ever.
A bummer, none the less. And everyday, the paperboy brings more.

I saw Floyd twice, so I can die a happy man now.
