Peeble Beach Concourse D'elegance

Is anyone going to Beeble Beach for the 2006 Concourse D'elegance in a couple of weeks?

I'm considering going out to Cali and wanted to see what the inside scoop is on this event and it's associated activities.

I've gone 5-7 times but have skipped the last couple years. It is extremely crowded and parking rather far away and taking the shttle bus in is the icing on the hassle cake. Lately I spend both Sat and Sun at the Monterey Historic ar races at Laguna Seca whch is, of course, the same weekend. I've gone to the Historics something like 19 of the past 20 years.

It is an amazing weekend for a car nut, more to see than you can shake a stick at, and exotic cars on every street corner it seems like. However, accomodations are very tight. The crappiest Formica-clad motels in Monterey are getting $150/night-plus, and nice hotels $400-600. At this late date you might have a very tough time finding anything decent that is closer than Gilroy.

Whether you squeeze it in this year, or wait and go next year, you should definitely go at least once.

I've stopped going this year because, well, I've been so often and I no longer live in CA. My next ambition is to go to Goodwood.

Goodwood fest is great from everything I've seen and read. Definitly on the list of must sees.
For this event I was planning on attending Sat races at L'Seca. All the right cars and not jammed together at the same time.
I'm concerned about accomodations for Friday and Sat night now though. Didn't want fleas at a second rate hotel and 150 per night would be fine but 4-600 is too steep.
Do we not have a pelican in the area who can get an inside deal?

Buy a copy of the August 7 issue of Autoweek. There's a guide to the weekend's events inside. If you don't already have reservations, you'll not likely find a room within 50 miles of the place. And if you do, it won't be a good deal for what you get. You might try calling the local chamber of commerce. They sometimes know of vacancies. Try and spend your free time in Carmel.

Get to Pebble Beach early, if you want a seat near the stage. Get there early, if you don't like crowds or traffic. Get to the lunch tent early, if you want to eat there. Buy all the water you'll need for the day early, in case they run out. Getting my hint?

Think I'm going to miss the race day at LS the most. Oh well... More money for Wayne, Ha!

I believe that Mike was referring to concours, which does not have the extra "e" on the end. For some reason that word is misspelled about 98% of the time.

I agree w/ most everything on this page; it is an amazing event but I wish that I had gone ~20 years ago. About 8 years ago I decided to drive up there on a whim and catch the historic races and concours, I was completely ignorant about the motel room situation and other assorted costs. I jammed up there in my BMW 2002, and there was no rooms within ~40 miles just as someone said here. The only room I found was in some little town full of farm workers that looked like rural Mexico, a motel that I would not board my dog in for $150 @ night. And then I was informed the cost of the concours and races, which was in the hundreds of dollars. I jumped in the car and drove all the way home. That was a long night.

Plan ahead, reserve a campsite at the track - that's the affordable way to go plus you skip the traffic in/out of Laguna Seca on race days. The ticket for the Historics is not too expensive. The concours is expensive anyway you cut it, I personally won't go again. Multiple other car events that weekend from auctions to group drives etc.
