1987 Ferrari Testarossa with 80k miles!!

I found a guy selling a 1987 Ferrari Testarossa with 80,000 miles. The car was reaqlly clean and I thought that maybe the mileage was a misprint but he did confirm it was 80k miles. He said the previous owner used it 3-4 days a week. He wants $56k...but damn, thats alot of miles on a Ferrari.

I remember as a young guy in '63 oogling used Ferraris at a dealer in Connecticut. I was astounded to learn from a guy that worked there that pistons cost $100 apiece. I wonder what that works out to be at today's prices when inflation is figured in.

Hmmm, let's see; buy the 1987 Testarossa or stand in an ice-cold shower tearing up hundred dollar bills while bashing myself in the face w/ a tire iron.

Decisions, decisions.....

That's an earlyTestarossa, the mid-88 onward are better, with the 5-stud wheels, low door mirrors and other changes.
Make sure it has complete history with timing belt changes, valve adjust, oil seals and the ac actually works...

Budget $1.00 - $1.50 per mile for maintenance.

Be prepared to sell everything except for the 91 Accord to keep it on the road

I saw an '86 Ferrari at a Porsche dealer a few days ago in their new car showroom--red with tan interior--looked like new, 28K miles. $63K. Just had a $9300 tuneup. Some tuneup.

It was actually white. Hmmm, I don't think I want to mess with that kind of maintenance.

Better check and see when the last major service was done. Have you driven it yet? After working on the porsche I swear that Germans have the smallest hands. When I tried to drive a testarossa, I thought Italians must have the narrowest feet. There was barely any room between the pedals.

Sounds very expensive for an extremely high-mileage example of one of the least collectible Ferraris in the least desirable color.

Think about who is going to want to buy that 80K mile car from you?

Run man, run.

I LOVE ferraris. Beautiful cars. That sound....nothing like it on earth. After I turned 30, I made the desicion to get a sports car, and started out looking at Ferraris. But the research just scared the hell out of me.

Could I afford to pay $5000 for a tune up? Sure. But why the f*ck would I? I don't light my cigars with $100 bills for a reason.

Porsches are down right economical compard to the prancing horses.

Don't a lot of these go up for sale about the time a major service is due? And aren't many of the major services time based as well as milage based? In other words, if the timing belts are "X" years old, they need to be changed regardless of milage on them?

I spoke with a guy at a local show'n'shine with an older Testosterone. He bought his for $35k and was immediately stuck with a $9k timing belt replacement. He was rather dissillusioned with Ferrari ownership. He was VERY interested in my experiences with the 911. I guess he thought "high-end foreign sports cars" were pretty much the same regardless of make. He bought it kind of blind and knew he probably screwed up. That was last year. I bet he owns a Porsche by now.

So heres how I feel about sports cars in general with Ferrari in mind:

Once its in your garage and you've gone through it, it becomes just another car. My Porsche? 5 years ago when I didn't know a thing about them I was mystified by the badge and thought no way I would end up with one. Now I have one, I know every single peice and part of it and its become "just a car", albiet one that I really like. The love remains, but the mystery is gone.

Testerossa? Awesome car, but after I know everything about it its almost gauranteed that it'll become "just another car" to me, only with the outrageous cost of ownership. I venture to say that I would come to hate the marque if I ever owned one that I was tempted to work on myself.

I'm not going to try and change your mind about this... but I can tell you that a Ferrari at redline is an experience you will NEVER forget. It traps you for life. Game over.

These Testarossas are aging well. I never really cared for the styling. But I saw one on the road the other day and it really looked good! They're probably the cheapest midengine 12-banger Ferrari out there.
