There you go, now we will need a sunami warning system for Florida and New Orleans, suppose GDub will be blamed for this as well, more tax $$ wasted and more conspiracy theory material.

Probably been a long time since the earth has moved for a lot of those old folks in FL.

The main reason people blame the fed for screw-ups in disaster relief is that the fed takes so much money from each individual in the state, and from each business, then creates a huge bureaucracy in FEMA which promises to rush assistance to where it's needed; leaving few local and state resources by comparison.

Imagine how much better it could have been if each county in the Gulf states had kept their tax money locally and simply paid for things themselves.

And, if they failed, that failure would have been local as well, and everyone would know that. There would be no far off centralizing state to blame.

I mentioned this to my mother this morning, and she thought she felt something yesterday but dismissed it because it's unusual. She lives in the pan handle of FL. We lived for many years when I was younger in Northern Japan where there are lots of earthquakes so my mother still notices that sort of stuff.

I would agree that it should work that way in reality but I believe it is naive to suggest that Mayor Nutjob and the other local (corrupt) goverment offices could deal with metering out resources to handle such a catastrophe. I know you will say feds are corrupt as well but if the local goverments kept the money it would be squandered on some local stadium being built below sea level or some other fiasco.

Actually, we haven't had an earthquake in the area since 1952. From whaty I heard,this one was about 250 miles out into the Gulf. No tsunami issues other than maybe a couple of slightly larger waves. The big killer tsunamis are almost always caused by undersea landslides caused by quakes. Unless there is a significant displacement of some dirt, the waves don't amount to much. The Indian Ocean tsunamis were really bad because the quake caused a large piece of the sea botom to collapse. Kinda adding insult to injury to the Gulf Coast......I have dodged 7 or 8(I think....I lost count) hurricanes and 3 or 4 tropical storms in the last 3 years since i moved into my house, which incidentally, sits about 7 feet above sea level on a good day. I need this like i need.........well, an earthquake.........lol. And by the way......California is ther sphincter of the US, but that is ok.......one day, most of it well slide off into the sea after a mega-quake and the resulting tsunamis will wipe out some of our larger economic competitors like Japan and China........muah, ha, ha, ha, ha

According to the article, 260miles southwest of Tampa. Also according to the article there was a 5.2 quake in the same place in Feb. But yeah, FL has very little seismic activity.

Yes, but since that would be local, the locals would be in nearly direct contact with the sleazeballs and choose to do or not do something locally. Most people forget, that each level of government has "overhead", an amount of money collected that is spent on administering the loot, in the case of the fed that overhead is usually 20-80%, with the last average I saw being around 60%. In other words, the fed is approximately the same as the worst of the so-called charities.

Also, since it's local business, even if corrupt, no one in another part of the country has any business telling them what to do with their money in any case.

no but it is GONE! Enough to pay for this place, pay off all my bills, and a decent nest egg. It is the ONLY house that has sold in the neighborhood in 4 months. MOST FL. R.E. is just sitting. Thank God, it was killing me.

The Porsche loves it up here. Lots of winding roads and hills, along with the crisp morning and evening air.

Now I can relax and begin to enjoy my retirement. How are things down there with you Jeremy?
