new VW owner (pray for me)

Well, the deed is done. Finally were able to come to an agreement on price, decided to go with leather instead of plaid cloth. Now I just have to figure out what all the damn buttons do. Pretty posh. Hopefully it will behave itself and not break.

the new and the old:

Cool!

Can you fit a motorcycle in the back?

in front is the Subie. 15K miles, so pretty much new. Hoping to get a decent price for it at Carmax. In back is the GTI. Already has a scratch in it, but what are you gonna do? Answer, not much.

Weird getting used to driving an automatic. My left foot keeps wanting to go for the clutch, especially at stop lights. Since my knee won't really bend though it doesn't move very far. The paddles and DSG are at least somewhat entertaining. It seems there are optimal times to use them and do your shifts, plus I have to find where the power band is...it is supposed to be pretty low and flat up to about 5500 rpm. Not too much turbo lag, but when you combine that with the DSG in auto mode there is a bit of a pause. But I have no choice...I ain't drivin' a stick any time soon, and am sick of cabs.

Motorcycle will not fit in the back, thank you

VWs seem to be luck of the draw. Some people have zero problems, other have a bunch of them. Hopefully I'll be in the former camp. But right now makes me no never mind. I can actually drive myself places! Hot damn. Tonight its off to the medical supply store for a nice big bag of gauze sponges and wraps. Huzzah!

WE still have an older Passat. When it runs, it is a joy. When it breaks, it is expen$ive. It is relegated to "spare car"status now since the A/C/ fritzwd and to repair it would cost $1,600!!

Get well fast!!

Nice. I like the VW's shape much more than the Subaru.

Don't expect a good price from CarMax. Evidentially their whole gig is to buy your car NOW, but at very little over Blue Book even the car is in perfect shape. The idea is you don't have to hassle with the effort; but your lack of hassle can also be your loss money-wise.

CarMax priced my mother-in-law's near perfect, low mileage Maxima very conservatively. I listed it on Craigslist and it was sold for $2.5K more three days later.

Blue book "good" trade-in value is more than I owe, so it is worth it to me to bypass the hassle. I can't show a car on crutches. Plus I'd have to deal with paying off the note, getting title, etc. As long as I come out even I'm fine with it.

The stereo is ok, but there is a "soft clipping" issue that people seem to have. Some have cured it by flashing the radio ECU, but it isn't clear what the problem is. Most see a sudden volume drop. Could be the radio hunting for signal and multiplex issues (only seen on radio, not on CD), or something with the automatic volume compensator. I haven't read the manual yet so I have no clue. First thing is to call and activate the Sirius...first three months are free.

I like both cars, the VW is cooler though.

My sis-in-law has a Passat wagon that has had some problems but VW took care of them while under warranty. It has 96k miles and is still going strong.

Congratulations Todd. Welcome to the V-Dub Family officially. Dubfest is this weekend, time to meet the family . I am kind of partial to the color.

Now go get the windows tinted. You won't regret it especially with the leather.

Yeah let us know what the CarMax folks do. I was selling my wife's loaded up 03 Expedition and was debating on driving to OC to give them a whirl but ended up selling to a PP at the last minute. I would expect them to offer poor condition wholesale and consider anything over that a win. The used car market is pretty flat right now and with gas prices dropping (for now) econo cars may not have the draw they did just a few months ago.

Good luck!
