0.308 - Which one?

I'm in the market for a .308 rifle. I love the M-14 stlye Springfield M1As...except for the price. And they seem a bit hard to find, unless you want the $2K+ models.

What about some of the FN-FAL knock-offs?

Or maybe a different .308, say by 7.62x39?

Suggestions?

M1A ia a good way to go. I had one that was hand picked oof the line in Illinois, but sold it to finance the Porsche hobby. It was fun to shoot and I always liked the style of it.

Check out gunbroker.com. I have seen a few deals there occasionally. You'll have to find a local dealer that will do paperwork for you to buy from out of state.

Here's a pic of mine before I sold it.

What are you going to be using the rifle for hunting, target, etc?

Also look at a remmington 700 they are pretty cheap and lots of aftermarket parts available

FN/FAL SA58.

If you want to do it on the cheap, a nice SKS can be had (at least where I live) for $250. It's nowhere near as accurate as an M1/M14 or FAL, but it'll get done what it was designed to get done.

I have one, and absoutley love shooting it. Barrels of fun.

red-beard, you need to give more details. What is the gun for?

If its just for fun, there are plenty of 7.62x39 options. I have a MAK90 (Chinese AK) that pops off just fine. If you are looking for something a bit more upscale in that department, look at VEPR. REALLY nice Russian made AKs.

Getting away from the AKs, and considerably higher in price, how about an Armalite? Beautiful weapons.

If you were thinking a hunting/sharpshooting...well....skys the limit there. To many options to list. As Az911 pointed out, the Remington 700 is a classic.

How about an FN-49?

My Dad's got an FN-49 in 7.62X51 (.308) that he wants to sell. Excellent rifle, accurate rare/collectible. It will appreciate in value as long as it's condition doesn't decline. So if you shoot a while and decide to get something else, you should at least break even or make a few bucks. He probably wants $700-$800 for it. If you want to see what they look like, check "Guns America" website under the FN rifle section. There are several listed there with pics so you will get an idea of market value and what they look like. They are the forerunner design for the FN/FAL. FN produced them in several different calibers for various countries as contract military weapons.

HK cant go wrong for simplicity. FN-FAL the majority of the worlds armies use them #1 in sales. HK #2. M1A1 or M-14 super duper match all 3 YOU CANT GO WRONG! screw the pip squeek 7.62 x 39. no different than .223 round.

springfield super duper matches from factory custom shop take about 7 months to get. ask me how i know. when i finally got it grouped about 1/2 MOA. took it to local M1A1 guru who does camp perry rifles and a good portion of m-16 and M1A1's for snipers in iraq and afghan. he massaged the hell out of it and with federal 168 gr boattails it puts em thru the same hole ALL DAY long. only variable.......my breathing/wind/my calcs/my trigger squeeze(not pull). unreal damn rifle but heavy and more involved as far as dissassembly than HK and FNFAL's.

all can be made into tack drivers. its only money. bolts are less expensive due to less moving parts to massage vs. semi-autos.

hell you only live once........go to HKPRO.com and look at the PSG1. a mere $10000 bucks. REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT! LOL!

for bolts go to mcmillian firearms buy there fiberglass stock, find rem 700 in paper cheap and start with hart or schillen barrel and off you go building your own. i did this and started with rem 700 heavy barrel cheap out of paper. well when it was all said and done and lots of cash to mcmillian..........i now own a M40A1 sniper rifle. man its sweet. have made a lot of money betting people i can hit objects far far away. and hit them!

check out ROBAR.com robbie makes some bad ass snipers w/folding stocks. great for fitting into p-car/planes/backpacks etc. when traveling.

FAL. I got my new r1a1 from century for 600 after xfer, etc. local shop has a l1a1 on an imbel reciever for the same - imbel recievers are close to 400 on their own. if you build one, lots of caliber options, like 243

If you prefer the accuracy of a bolt action, yet still want to be a bit of a paramilitary look? Check out the Steyr "Scout" rifle...(edit)
It's primary caliber is the .308 round...It's 1998 new price was around $2,600. No idea what they sell for these days. Nice design for hunting, military, law enforcement, etc. Made by Steyr Mannlicher, Austria.

No, semi-auto please. If I want a bolt action, I'll get a 1903.

And I'm complaining about a $1500 rifle and you bring up a bolt action for $2,600?

I see M1A's at the local gun shows all the time. If you don't really need a new one, just hit some of the local shows with cash in hand. It might take awhile, but you should be able to find one in your price range.
