You're making assumptions that you have no reason to make and for that, sir, I whole heartedly say, fuch you and your opinion.

I will not debate this further.

I personnal believe that ALL citizens should be required to serve a minimum of one year (preferably two) in SERVICE to this country. The service would be done in The Military, or The Peace Corps, or The Civilian Conservation Corps. Required to complete prior to turning 25 or you are thrown out of the country and NEVER allowed to return or receive benefits from this country. Oh, and just throw in a huge fine for not serving just for grins.
No thanks. We all ready have too many **** bags in the military. Don't need to have the rest of them serving too.

Really; I do not see anything wrong with some form of service to the country. Other nations have such a system, and it seems to work well. The draft existed when I was a young guy, and the choice I had was either the infantry (drafted) or signing up in another branch. Living at the time near water for most of my life, I opted the Coast Guard. I never regretted the decision to serve. I learned self-reliance, teamwork and how to follow orders. When I got out, I was finally ready for College, and found it an interesting experience. One could tell returning military from non-servers at a glance. More self assured and disciplined.

If there were mandated service, the idea that there are too many "**** bags" would disappear, since the service would be more uniformly distributed among socio-economic levels. Granted, a few will duck service, but at least the system would be a bit more fair..

Sorry but some, not all, of the people I have seen in the military are lazy and just don't give a damn about what they do. I hear them complain everyday about how they hate the Navy, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I believe making it mandatory and making people serve only one or two years would amplify the problem. From my experience (12 years active duty service), the closer someone gets to being discharged, the less they work and greater the 'short timers' attitude they have. Now add all the people that don't want to join that are now forced to (under the idea that everyone should serve) and you can see how difficult things can be, especially for the folks that actually want to be in the military. This may not be true for all branches, I can only give my opinion on how I believe it would turn out for the Navy. Don't get me wrong, if it would work I would love to see everyone have their chance in the military.

Please keep in mind that in my scenario Service would be required, it does not dictate Military Service, just Service. There is also The Peace Corps and the Civilian Conservation Corps. All would help instill a sense of country and ownership.

FWIW, most of the people I heard complaining when I was Active Duty I was able to trace back to supervision.
