problem with my benz.
Hello,
I'm having a little trouble with my 1982 240D. Sometimes when I start my car, drive it and then turn it off - it does turn off. When this happens, the car doesn't really shift or at least until the redline. Also, the brake pedal gets really stiff. Where do you think I should look to fix this one? Thanks.

dunno how benzes work, but i'm thinking a hydraulic link between teh two (tranny / brake system ) and a leak somewhere...

The problem is a vacuum leak, somewhere in the system. (one of the door locks is likely leaking.)
The fuel shut-off (engine shut-off) is vacuum actuatated. To manually shut off the engine, open the hood, and push the lever which reads "STOP." Last edited by Saab Pilot; 10-01-2006 at 09:31 AM.. |

vacuum leak. You need a vacuum gauge, like a Mityvac. You will either have a failed vacuum pump (can possibly be rebuilt), or you have a leak in one of the lines or fittings. You need to isolate each line and test for leaks, and you can check the vacuum pump while the engine is running.

Thanks fellas.
Any ideas on where the best place to start looking for the leak might be? It seems like there's a 'black hose' that might be the source of the leak. Come to think of it, when I manually turn the car off, I do hear the hissing of a leak. The heat coming from the engine makes me reluctant to chase it down at that time though (I do like my fingerprints - haha). Thanks again.
