Having a problem with a housemate’s dog.
My housemate has a dog that barks at me endlessly when I walk around the house. The dog only does it my housemate is around. When she barks, my housemate simply goes “chill, chill” in a very light voice. She coddles the dog. I keep telling her to kick that dog’s ass when she barks, but she wont. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to get this dog to stop barking when I walk through the house short of strychnine.

Try telling the dog "NO" in a firm, low pitched voice

tried that already.
I think my housemate expects me to help with the discipline of her dog. I made it clear to her that I'm not responisble for that. The dog really is a mess, neurotic, paranoid, abused. Plus she coddles it.

shock collar would be a good idea, however my housemate would flip. I need something that does not leave a visible trail.

Spray bottle or squirt gun with a bit of water and either soap, or very dilute ammonia.
It stops barking or it gets the spray. Do that a few times and doggie gets discouraged

"It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again"
good idea. I'll try that..

The dog is in charge of her, you are next. Get rid of both.

Kidding, take the dog for 'control' walks. Meaning ,keep it close to you, correct with firm voice, adopt 'I'm in charge' mind set , they get it real fast.

I have seen people walking their dogs with a collar that has a soft strap that wraps around the mussel I presume to keep the dog from biting people/other dogs. I suppose that would work for barking also.

I cant walk the dog, she tucks her tail between her legs whenever I come close and runs away. When my housemate is home, she barks.
Going to try the lemon juice thing. Just need to get a good clear shot wothout my housemate seeing.

it's actually pretty pathetic how much she coddles the dog. In all other aspects, she's pretty much a perfect housemate. always pays lease/bills on time, free rum, keeps the house clean. etc..

Unless you both are willing to put it some time and work, spraying the dog is not going to do anything. Watch one of the Dog Whisperer shows..or get rid of the dog.
Your housemate has NO CLUE about pet ownership, you are just stuck with both. Rika |

Easier, effective and less likely to cause fiction with the housemate.

Scott, the collar you mentioned is a 'Halti' not so much for bite control as for pull control. When the dog or walker pulls against the leash, it forces the dog's head toward his chest..no like and thus don't pull at the leash.

A nice bowl of antifreeze will solve the problem.
