But are you willing to do what it takes to deserve it, should you be called back to active duty? Granted, at your age, it's highly unlikely, but it IS still possible.

A significant difference between military retirement, and civilian retirement, is that a retired military member can be recalled to active duty. According to Department of Defense (DOD) Directive 1352.1:

* Involuntary Order to Active Duty. The Secretary of a Military Department may order any retired Regular member, retired Reserve member who has completed at least 20 years of active military service, or a member of the Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps Reserve to active duty without the member's consent at any time to perform duties deemed necessary in the interests of national defense in accordance with 10 U.S.C. 683 (reference (b)). This includes the authority to order a retired member who is subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) to active duty to facilitate the exercise of court-martial jurisdiction under Section 302(a) of reference (b). A retired member may not be involuntarily ordered to active duty solely for obtaining court-martial jurisdiction over the member.

In all honesty, however, the chances that a military retiree would be recalled to active duty after age 60, or who have been retired for more than five years, are slim. DOD categorizes retirees into three categories, with category I as the most likely to be recalled to active duty, and category III as the least likely. Individuals over the age of 60 are in category III, which is the same category as individuals with disabilities. Recall of category III retires is extremely unlikely. According to DOD, the categories are:

* Category I. Nondisability military retirees under age 60 who have been retired less than 5 years. E1.1.3.2.
* Category II. Nondisability military retirees under age 60 who have retired 5 years or more.
* Category III. Military retirees, including those retired for disability, other than categories I or II retirees (includes warrant officers and health care professionals who retire from active duty after age 60).

MALE NURSE CONVICTED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING COMATOSE PATIENT...

Date: Tue, 8 Nov 1994 15:06:33 U
From: ICAD Editors
Subject: Tale of two nurses

Edmonton, Alberta. On November 1, 1994, The Alberta Court of Appeal increased the sentence given Terry Keizer, a male nurse convicted of sexually assaulting a comatose patient in the intensive care unit. The 27-year-old woman was admitted to the intensive care unit of an Edmonton hospital after an unsuccessful suicide attempt. She was unconscious, naked, with her arms and legs in restraint, and breathing with a ventilator when Keizer sexually assaulted her. He pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault, but the prosecutor appealed the sentence when he was given only 18 months and the original trial judge said that the short sentence was partly because the woman's unconscious state was "favorable" to the accused. The appeals court increased the sentence from 18 to 30 months, finding that the use of the position as a professional caregiver was problematic and that the oiffence was "a serious interference with teh sexual integrity of respondent."

Meanwhile, in Florida, 45 year old Bruce Alan Young, another male nurse, has pleaded innocent and is waiting to stand trial for charges resulting from having sex with patients. He was arrested in October after another nurse allegedly caught him in the act of having sex with a 15-ear-old girl who was still under anesthesia in the recovery room of Citrus Memorial Hospital. Since that time, he has been charged with rape of four other women.

In 1991, Young was required by Florida Board of Nursing to undergo psychological testing for sexual deviancy before being licensed because of allegations that he had had sex with a 19-year-old high school student who was his driver's ed student. Young was licensed as nurse after passsing the test. In his hearing pefore the nursing board, young pleaded, "I will be a good nurse if you give me a chance." He asked for a chance to prove himself, and he got it.

Jeez guys, get back on your meds. I think secession is, at least, a worthy thought experiment. FastPat feels he has, to some degree, minimized his dependency on the established government and become somewhat self-sufficient. We can argue over the degree to which he has succeeded. But the premise is not unsound. As DD74 pointed out, there are examples of people like the Amish who have essentially seceeded and thrived. The Amish are probably a bit of an extreme example since they seceeded from the whole century - not just the government.

I think it is possible to live reasonably well "off the grid". If you can find some property in a region with no property taxes, generate your own energy and pump your own water, then you are on the way to living without an income and therefore without paying income taxes. If you could grow your own food, you'd be more than half way free.

Of course, living inside a society that uses Uncle Sam's green papers as currency can be a problem - unless you can find someone who will barter for guns and ammo.

In general, since the gov likes to tax economic activity, you'd have to stay away from the green papers as much as possible.

But even then you're still being protected by the gov's satellites and bombers and CIA agents. IIRC, there was a group that took over a WWII radar platform off the coast of Britain and won the right in British court to claim ownership and declared themselves a sovereign nation. Unfortunately, when a bunch of other people attacked with guns to sieze the rig, the Brits offered no help.

An almost trivial example can be found in condo associations. I own a condo in a complex where we all agree to pay a monthly fee. And in return, our roads, garbage, landscaping, snow removel etc is taken care of privately - and they are done BETTER than the same services offered by the town. Now, I have to say there are problems - mainly in the "Little Hitlers" who get on the condo board and then wield power for the first time in their sad little lives and go nuts. So one has to decide if one prefers the "little" Hilters or the bg ones.

Personally, I rather like Uncle Sam. I guess I am still under his spell. But becoming less dependent on him is almost never a bad idea.

So let's be serious for a sec. Fastpat, how are you handling the crummy things like garbage, roads, etc? Do you guys have any sort of formalized structire like my condo board and have any of your locals gotten out of control or caused problems by drinking too much of the "facism flavored" coolaide?

Aint this the truth. Best posting yet.

At least most governments are run by professionals. With some temperment and experience with the work.

Community gardens, PTAs, craft and food cooperatives are all filled with little Stalins and Apparatchiks..

Hey, I've enjoyed clobbering Pat as much, or more, than most of you guys. You know, being a government-lover and all.

But you know, he's got WAY more talent than I've got. And more than Rodeo. Folks like myself or Rodeo seem to be able to piss off up to about 80% of you guys, but nowhere near 100% Pat is the undisputed heavyweight champion of conflict here. My hat's off.

The problem here is that Pat's initial posting doesn't hold water. He says he has formed his own government, yet multiple issues remain unanswered:

1). Where are you getting your water? Unless it is from a well and you keep that water treated and clean yourself, that is a government function.
2). What about sewage and/or garbage? Do you have your own landfill/septic tank? If these things are going into your city system, that is a government function.
3). Power? Please don't tell us you are getting any power off the city grid...I would hope you have windmills or solar panels.
4). Roads? Are your roads unpaved? If not, do you do your own road maintenance?
5). Security? I know you have your junior Jihadist GI Joe outfit, but could you defend your land against a dedicated attack by a foreign power?

Questions abound...

Another thought. Has anyone here ever actually seen Pat? Or should we not pay attention to the man behind the curtain?

Pat, how does your government deal with conflict resolution, and issuing legal tender? I believe the governement conjures up its own reasons for existing in many cases. I also believe living off the grid is in most aspects feasible. But I rely on the legal system and financial system with every transaction, how does your government deal with these issues without relying on the Union?

Are you saying that "fastpat" is one of these two men?

Not in the least, Don. Pat's stated here on numerous occasion that he, himself is a male nurse. I'm merely associating pat with those of a like mind as his, the way he likes to do with military people (or any other group that doesn't see eye to eye with him).

But then again, since I've never met pat personally, I'm not going to say he's not one of those people, either.

That's easy. In Pat's Utopia the gubmit doesn't do anything. It's a free-for-all. Pat thinks this would work out well.
