I saw Mr. 914-6 during lunch today, and had a very interesting conversation about the Targa in question. All he really knows is the car is much more than meets the eye. The engine, while a Porsche, is something other than a 2.4 and the only way to find exactly what it is, is to pull the heads - and no one wants to do that. One way or the other, the engine can pull beyond 7,500 RPM and has the gearing to go along with the RPM. And as Kurt says, Marco (914-6) knows his *****e. Um...in short, I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'm not sure my money would go on the turbo. Good luck with the sale, Malibu. As for the rest of you guys... ...Anyone have a towel? I need to wipe the egg off my face. :p |
what a great pelican turnout................bench racers vs paper pushers vs magazine freaks vs ricky racers vs eveelyn wood speed reading/spelling/punk-u-ation specialists vs REAL RACERS!

Encinal Canyon to County Line down PCH. Some of us know where that is. SmileWavy

What I find interesting is that he's owned the car for almost 20 years, routinely revs it to 8500rpm, and hasn't had to rebuild it (otherwise he's know what kind of engine components it had when he disassembled it).

I may not be the sharpest tack in the box but...
Can anyone explain to me how porting and compression ratio have anything to do with rpm redline of an engine??? I understand balancing, different valve springs, better rod and thru case bolts, shuffling pinning, etc, etc...but porting & cr? I really don't understand that at all.... Oh BTW (is that "by the way" or "between women"....I guess they both work), I am one who thinks early cars are thoroughly overpriced. They have transcended being plain cars (which is what I really care about), and have become works of art or investments (which is something that would have Ferry rolling over in his grave I think). Of course, I stayed at a Marriot last night, not a Holiday Inn, so I could be wrong. |
execmalibu. Sounds like you've got the experience and the car. I apologize for anything offensive that I said in previous posts.
I would however recommend a rewrite of your ad. Lose the ALL CAPS and give a bit more info instead of laying out claims that seem crazy. Go ahead and say your car will do 165 and 8500 rpm, but at some point it may also be a good idea to say that the engine is most likely not stock. Correct case, but not a stock engine. I'm not trying to be an ass, just offering a suggestion. If I was in the market for a car like this and I came across your ad without knowing your experience or the car, I'd pass right by and go on to the next ad. Good luck. |
If anything, shouldn't this be labeled deceptive advertising....
Especially if this is some high compression 2.5 or 2.7 or 2.8 engine with non-stock gearing. The bottom line is it seems it is not a stock 2.4S and that is what the title of this post leads you to believe..... Stock 2.4 S cars with stock gearing do not rev to 8500 and go 165mph. The factory never built even (1) one that could do that. You're way outside the bellcurve on that one (sorry for the high school statistics). Better to say: "My 2.8 RSR with Nurburgring gearing does 165mph." OK....now we're talking. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/loki16.gif |
Sorry....still not following the argument.
How does more air make an engine rev higher? I mean really.... But I got lost last night trying to find the Holiday Inn ! |

So, the seller comes on and writes a lot of "stuff"...mostly about how he's a wizard driver and gets paid more than most do in a month. Irrelevant, I think. here's the nut of it: from the ebay auctionhe states: I GUESS THAT I SHOULD DISCUSS THE MECHANICAL ASPECTS OF THIS CAR.. FIRST THE ENGINE IS A CORRECT 1973 911S ENGINE #6330055... IS IT THE ORIGINAL ENGINE? (I DONT KNOW AND I DONT CARE!) EARLY 1973 "S" CAR, EARLY 1973 "S" ENGINE ... I DO KNOW THIS ENGINE RUNS AMAZINGLY STRONG!.. THE ENGINE PULLS VERY HARD PAST 8,500+ RPM WITH NO PROBLEM! (YES PAST THE HIGHEST 8,000 RPM MARK ON THE TACH!).. THE ENGINE DOES HAVE THE ORIGINAL MECHANICAL INJECTION (MFI) WITH 013 PUMP... THE SHORT GEARED (HILL CLIMB RATIOS) 915 TRANSMISSION SHIFTS GREAT AND HAS THE RS LIMITED SLIP !... Right there, it is a "correct" 911S engine. To me, and the resto fo the world, that means it's got 911 parts. The engineers made them so they rev to 7300....of course theres a safety margin over that, but things get pretty interesting pretty quickly over redline. Springs float, rods etc strech and so on. 165MPH is pretty darn fast...AND the car has shorter gearing......so, the combination indicates that this is, at the very least, a highly incredulous claim. It's simple....the guy stated the engine was a 911s, and that it goes 165. One of the two statements aint true. Period.... (even if Tom Cruise kisses your ass. (I'd pay him lots to stay away from mine)) |

Any motor will rev to 8500, only those that are built properly will survive there. It's a combination of things and can be difficult to explain; but that, I believe, are the basics. |
Maybe the seller isn't a liar - maybe he's just just an azshole. That would explain it.
|
Actaulllymany motors will rev to higher than recommended RPMs...but few will:
-breath well enough to make power, - survive due to the exponential nature of reciprocating forces. The S motor IS a high rpm breather....BUT...with stock internals I am not going to buy one thats been revved that high. Pistons need to be lightened and balanced, conrods the same, valves are better lighter with better springs. And the list goes on. Without a build list of the engines internals, this is just a whole bunch of smoke and mirrors. |
David, your motor will easily go 8000 RPM. It'll do it quite often if you took out the limiter.
My dad's got a 2.8 w/twin plug, factory ST heads, balanced internals, stock rods, AASCO springs, RSR light flywheel and light pressure plate and his motor goes 8500 in a heartbeat...literally. Big ports, good rotating assembly, stock rods, basic springs ... sounds pretty Porsche to me. 8500 isn't really a big deal, fellas. FWIW, Porsche does an EXCEPTIONAL job balancing their motors right out of the factory. Any rod up to 3.0 will easily be strong enough to rotate at 8000+ .... it's 3.2 and up that suck in terms of RPM. Maybe the rod bolts are the weak link, but stock rod bolts are fine as long as they're within spec. Not to mention the fact that a 2.4, 2.7, or 2.8 piston is pretty light. |
