MOST OF MY RACING IS IN TIGHT CANYONS SO I RARELY SEE 4TH... AND UNLESS WE ARE IN A LONG STRAIGHT I NEVER SEE 5TH..
Wild Man: I'd stop right here and tone it down for your own sake. Perhaps none of the "major" insurance players are lurking here. This essay is enough to put you out the door and on assigned risk (SR22) and then you'll "feel the pain" when the premium notice comes. Just in case: http://sr22shop.com/ And, it sure wouldn't play well in court either should you happen to have an accident and injure (or worse) someone else. Admitting it among friends is one thing, but in a public forum it is not wise. Tom |

How fast will my stock 3.2 go? I've got a 100% EBAY RATING

FWIW I beleive it. I've taken my 3.0 to 7000 in 5th (911 box) and an indicated 145. My 911 box is short geared as well, at least 1-4 anyway. If I calculate my speed vs. RPM to his speed vs. RPM he only needs 8000 to go 165.
Now if that is a massaged 2.4S it would likely make max HP way up in the RPMs, right where he needs it for speeds that fast. Let's say the motor's putting out 250-275, naturally aspirated with short gears, it would likely kill a 4spd 930 0-90 MPH. Thevery best drag cars reach max HP at the redline in high gear just before going through the lights, this is similar, he needs max HP at the target MPH and he likely has it. Example my internally stock 3.0 maxes out in HP right around 6000 RPM, if I had the heads and cams the motor would happily make power at 7000 and even higher with modified internals which may or may not be required as I'm not sure what the limiting factor is. I do know this, you can't drive and american V8 around all day at the redline and not blow it up but you can drive a 911 around at the factory redline on the autobahn as well as racetracks all over the world and it lasts. In fact that's one of the 911's strong points, reliability. Given that fact I believe that the factory redline is conservative and remember we are talking 2.4S with a 7300 RPM factory redline. One important side note, my factory tach leads my engine by at least a few hundred RPM when mashing it in the lower gears. It'll swing well past 7000 before the 7000 pill in my MSD kicks in. I got to the point that I used to shift at an indicated 7200 when thrashing my car without hitting the limiter. With the short gears I never felt the car nose over as indicated by my dyno runs. I now shift at 6500, just after it noses over (according to the dyno) and I'll bet my 0-60 is faster than before. Besides all that a flat six is naturally balanced and far smoother than say a V8 or I4, I'm not at all surprised by their willingness to rev. Most people know how out of balance a V8 is naturally and thus the need for added weight to the crank yet with good internals these motors will happliy turn 8000 RPM. I should know, I drag raced a 4" stroke 410CI 351W Ford engine and shifted it above 8000 all the time. The only times I ever grenaded that motor it was related to detonation caused by me getting too greedy with the AF or timing and it was always a rod or main bearing that failed. In comparison the 911 motor is well balanced, has a strong crank, strong rods, 7 main bearings vs. 5 for a V8 for a well supported crank, lighter valvetrain with over head cams, better out of the box port design than most cars I've seen and was designed to be driven in the upper RPM range for extended periods, so no I don't think 15-20% safety factor is out of line with the rated redline. Remember the late 80's early 90's Mustang GT, top speed 145 with 225 HP and that's a heavy box of a car compared to a 911. Knowing what I know about engines and straight line racing I have little doubt a well massaged S engine can push a 911 to 165, how long it takes to get there is another story. ;) |

When the going gets tough...(ahh I forget the rest of it!) |
I agree....this is the stupidest thread ever!
1) Call the factory...they'll tell you a stock 2.4S will never rev to 8500 without a big bang! I don't care if this is the one engine that is 2% better....that doesn't equate to 8500rpm. And I beg to differ....1200rpm at this level is a big deal....really big. 2) A 2.4S with stock gearing will never reach 165....unless you dropped it off a cliff (like this thread ought to get). Again even if this is the engine that is on the far end of the bell curve, you're not going to get 165 mph out of a stock 2.4S. 3) More air flow and high compression ratio does not equal higher reving engines. Not on this planet, not on mars and not on alpha sentauri (and I'm telling you the wildest things in the universe can happen there!!!!). What allows for higher reving is better & lighter valve springs, lighter internal parts, better rod and thru bolts, boat tailing the crank, etc. Higher compression ratio does not give you higher revs. Nor does higher air flow. Fluid dynamics for those that aren't engineers says that higher fluid flow means more pressure drop....not easier for the air to get through. More power does not give you more rpms.... Where on earth did this notion come from? A plain T could easily out-rev an S if it had all the correct internals. There is flaw after flaw after flaw in the reasoning of this post. Am I the only one missing the boat here? None of the rationalizing here for a 2.4S to go 165mph and rev to 8500rpm makes any sense. It's all a bunch of BS. End of story.... Close this thread.... Please. ahhhh....that feels much better now.... I can delete this from my subscribed posting list. |
Well, Thank you Doug...I was beginning to doubt I'd ever driven a 2.4 911S...Couldn't agree more...bunch of B.S. But what do I know? I leave my 7300 rev limiter in place.

and.. you missed the conflation of short gears (when he says he is beating a 930) with the high top speed...

The ads a joke, the guys a putz...racing 40 years? In the canyons?? Nice......! I've heard and read enough. The car is not that nice, sorry. And the ownership kills what the remaining nice parts. |
I know the owner. He and I have done some part trading in the past. He's a good guy. A real enthusiast. He's a bit of a bull in a china store but that's just who he is. It's his personality. No need for any excuses.
He has some great cars and this is one of them. This car could probably pull in another $5k if the car was prepped and the ad was done by Willie the guy who owns California Classix. The way I see it the thing he's being criticized about, his lack in advertising skill (he's not a flipper), is an opportunity for the bidder. The cars that are advertised best get the highest bids. Buyers who do their own research can save some money. His information may not be the most accurate so bidders just need to take that into account and bid accordingly. Is he a liar? No. Is he full of it? No. Is he prone to errors about all things Porsche? More than likely. I know I am and I've been an enthusiast a long time as well. |
A lack in advertising skill?? He said it has a 2.4 S motor, and revs to 8500, and goes over 165 MPH.
That's more than a "lack of advertising skill" in my book. Something is missing or doesn't match up....and if I'm spending stupid amounts of $ on an old car, that's the last feeling I want to have. |

i think if i ever sell my '87 cab my ad will read........."BEAT YELLOW BIRD @ LAGUNA" or better yet "RAN 300MPH @ BONNEVILLE", or maybe "BEAT BIG DADDY'S SWAMP RAT TOP FUELIE" or" BEAT ROBBY GORDONS TROPHY TRUCK" or " BEAT McMILLIANS CLASS 1 PORSCHE" and finally " I BEAT THE POOP OUT OF THE MARS ROVER"!!!!! this im sure will draw EVERY PELICAN out of its nest and i will be writing on the computer defending myself for the next 20 years! i think execmalibu, you and tom cruise should A) race some individuals here and once and for all, prove the cars capabilities or B) rewrite ad stating.........."Targa FOR SALE". and leave it at that. this one has been very entertaining to say the least. bragging rights come with winning a race or series of races thruout a season. you cant ever have those rights...............UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY RACE and PROVE IT! no matter how much money you have! thats the wonderful thing about racing. all the money in the world doesnt make you a winner. skill, determination, incredible prep, still allow the little guys to beat the snot out of factory teams! please send me an invitation to when the pelicans vs e-bay boy race will be held. we are all on the edge of our seats waiting for this one to happen! BRING YOUR CAMERAS! |

DOUG SKINNARD... NEWSFLASH! A PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE HAS BEEN FOUND!
"More air flow and high compression ratio does not equal higher reving engines. Not on this planet, not on mars and not on alpha sentauri (and I'm telling you the wildest things in the universe can happen there!!!!)."
This statement is twice as funny as quoting Car and Driver! "A plain T could easily out-rev an S if it had all the correct internals." This ***** is getting good I need to save some of these statements! Doug, NEWSFLASH!!!! The top international scientists have recently discovered a small spot in universe where your laws of physics do not apply! Whether it is because of devine intervention or the blessings of Timothy Leary the wildest things in the universe do happen in one unique and remote spot! Called Southern California. Your laws of physics and Hydrolic flow dont apply here. Everyone in the universe knows that ONLY in So Cal that after bolting a hi-po intake manifold and tube headers on a 100% stock Chevy, Ford, or Mopar (more air flow) that these engines will rev higher and faster and have more power. Vic Edelbrock and the guys at Hooker Header will also be very surprized to hear your definative statement "More air flow and high compression ratio does not equal higher reving engines" I will also let all of the Hot Rod shops with Flow Benches and engine Dynos know that the highest power and authority in the Universe has spoken and that all of their expertise is a waste of time. The fact that last week Nascar instructed all the teams at Talladega to install "restrictor plates" that reduces the intake port size by 1/16 on an inch clearly proves that more air flow has absolutely nothing to do with the engines power! Can you please explain how it is even remotely possible that my bone stock Dodge Viper picks up 5-10 HP on the Dyno by adding only K&N air filters? Or how my 427 Cobra picked up over 125 HP by adding only headers and side pipes.. I guess that I should forget about installing the bigger supercharger pulley on my SL55. More air flow will not increase the performance... But wait I live in So Cal.. Do the terms exist in the universe (outside of So Cal) like LET IT BREATH or UNCORK IT... Hemi heads dont work! Right? Because all they do is provide better air flow and combustion! Every engine builder knows that the most power comes from a good set of heads! Even if the valve and carburetor size is restriced a good flowed set heads can gain huge HP increases.. But only in So Cal.. 911T cams,911T heads and 911T induction will out rev a "S" with the correct internals? Thats great I did not know that!! I will let the engineers at the Porsche factory know that they had it all wrong! High lift long duration cams were a huge mistake on the RSR and other factory race cars. If Bob Holbert had only know this he could have won a few races.. |
My only point of contention is the top speed. If that car will go 165mph, how fast will the 3.0, 3.4, and 3.6 RSRs go that I race regularly against in HSR on REAL race courses like Daytona & Sebring? I KNOW how fast my 3.0 RSR will go (150-152mph, gear chart), and my motor is putting out about 275hp at the crank. There are 2.9, 3.0, 3.4, and 3.6 914-6 and RSRs that pull me on the banks of Daytona & the straights of Sebring, but these are full boogie race motors set on kill. Some of them may be touching 170-175mph, but that is it.

charleskieffner... Laguna Seca 1979, Riverside 1978, Willow Springs 1980
Charles,
"YOU CANT WIN IF YOU DONT RACE! PUT YOUR MONEY AND YOUR ENGINE/TRANNY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS!" Thats easy!! I have the trophies, pictures and witnesses from being the winner of my class at Riverside 1978, Laguna Seca 1979 , and at Willow Springs in 1981! I used to drive my Porsche the 5 hours to Laguna Seca, 2 hours to Riverside or the 2 hours to Willow. Kick the Girl Friend and Dog out of the car. Change the muffler to a straight pipe, put in larger main jets and go racing against guys with full race teams.. I won on several occassions.. (just luck..No skill.. right?) Then I would load everyone back in and drive the car back home.. I did the same thing in my 427 Cobra in 1986.. I still have the large poster with my car shown dead center! Try doing that... And dont just bring your cameras also bring your checkbook.. When I do win I dont expect to do it for free.. I get paid to drive fast thats how I make a large part of my living.. Malibu and my other toys are expensive! |
And So a New Day begins
First, Fluid dynamics doesnt apply here....Fluid doesnt compress
Air dynamics applies here...Air does compress. For some arguements you can use the fluid argument, but not here. The "easiest" example for air dynamics is a jet engine. The more fuel you throw to the fire the higher the rpm...infact the engine will tear itself apart if you let it. It will keep sucking the air in faster and faster, and compressing it along the way. For this instance, controlling detonation is key, along with breathing, easy in and easy out with a good vaccum effect. the H6 motor is balanced better than a V motor...I will go there. Well I am at work now and I can already tell this thread is not going to die... and the subject matter is going to keep changing.. |
