Another sign of the end of this country. If the terrorists don't win, there's always the rot from within...

Where's tabs?

Rodeo 10-18-2006 08:12 AM

Whatever. GWB abolished Habeas Corpus yesterday, and 10 more soldiers died in Iraq.

I'm not getting worked up about 3 elementary schools banning tag.

My daughter attended a gymnastics camp for a few weeks in Pa last summer called Woodward. They cater to talented kids in BMX, gymnastics, skateboarding. They often have past olympians and X-games athletes as instructors. I was shocked at the all of the BMX ramps, sunken trampolines and other cool stuff. I wanted to stay there myself! In today's law suit happy society, it is pretty rare to see something like this.

They probably profiled you as a parent to see if you are the type to sue.

Porsche-O-Phile 10-18-2006 08:28 AM

At least it wasn't named "Woodview".

No worries there. I despise "sue happy" types.

The thing is - they wont become an "introverted lump". They will come to a boil and act out in an inappropriate way. And then really get hurt and/or in trouble.

Superman 10-18-2006 08:48 AM

Probably a good idea. I got hurt playing tag, as a child. Yup. Bumped into another kid. Made my arm hurt for several seconds. Then there was the time I fell down. Skinned my knee.

Sheesh!

Man of steel my a$$! :p

Would that be because the reason schools are banning tag etc, is because they are afraid that if a child is hurt the school will be sued? Hmmm. Let's do the math shall we...

nostatic 10-18-2006 09:03 AM

there was a school out here in Santa Monica that banned tag because people "lost" when the game was played, and they didn't want kids feeling bad.

I'm serious.

This is sick, twisted crap. I personally do *not* micromanage my son's life/play. We don't have play dates...we go to the park and he plays with whoever's there and they do whatever they want (as long as nobody loses an eye). Monkey in the middle is a favorite. And I think kids need to learn how to lose...it's part of life.

I also don't force my kid to play organized sports. And for summer he split his time between camp at UCLA and this:

http://www.fitnessbythesea.com

The first day I picked him up from beach camp year before last, I asked how his day was. He said, "played." I asked what else, and he said, "oh, we went sea kayaking, then played yolley ball, then surfed."

I want to go to beach camp...

I remember a story about a school that banned the practice of choosing teams. You know, you get two team captains and they take turns picking their teams.
it was banned because the last kids picked got their feelings hurt.
It had nothing to do with the fact that thety were wimpy, or slow, or whatever.
I guess they have to wait until they get out in the real world to figure out that lesson.

just one more reason my kids don't go to public schools.

Jims5543 10-18-2006 09:44 AM

When I was a kid Long Island way out in the boonies in the mid 70's before eveyone from the city started moving out, we played a disturbing game by todays standards.

It was called Gestapo. We broke up into 2 teams. 1 member of each team was chosen secretly as the commander. It was each teams choice if the rest of the team was to know or not. Then each team took off into the woods (we had lots and lots of woods) we bounded to limits of play by streets.

Then after you hid your Commander you set out to find oposing members, once you ran them down and caught them. You would torture them until they gave you the comanders name, if they lied you ran them down again and beat them further. So it was a good idea not to lie so you did not get the beating.

This game would go on for hours and we played only in the summer when some kids from Brooklyn were out on the Island with us. They loved playing.

It was violent we got the crap kicked out of us, we ran for miles in the woods and would be exhausted at the end of the day. Sometimes you would have a nasty Indian burn on your arm or a fat lip or scratches but it was fun.

Could you imagine kids trying to play that today?

Porsche-O-Phile 10-18-2006 09:46 AM

Just one more reason I cringe at the thought of having kids. . . My life is f*cked up enough as-is without having to confront crap like this day in and day out. . .

Gonads. . . swift kick. . . problem solved. I really wish it was socially acceptable to do this without fear of reprisal by lawsuit. It'd fix a lot of the stupidity out there.

I got picked last most of the time. I was skinny, uncoordinated and weak.

It motivated me to work out and find sports I was good at.

I just went to my 10-year high school reunion. I was pleasantly surprised to see that compared to many of the people that picked on me, I was now muscular and thin.

Bad experiences as a kid often motivate people to correct behaviors as adults.

stevepaa 10-18-2006 09:50 AM

Skinned knees, banged heads...that's what the school nurse was for.

All that is gone now, funding reduced everything.

I think the elimination of mandatory PE every day was a gross error of judgement.

Burnin' oil 10-18-2006 09:51 AM

Is "smear the queer" still acceptable?

Nathans_Dad 10-18-2006 09:55 AM

Yes, but it is now called "Provide emotional support and love for those who may have alternate sexual orientations"

Superman 10-18-2006 09:57 AM

I knew a guy who was very wimpy-looking. He would be the LAST guy you would pick for your team. And he never did become muscular-looking. But he did become a national champion wrestler. He was much more capable than he appeared.

I meet people all the time who apparently missed that part of high school where you figure out the "pecking order." That's one of my strongest inpression of Dubya. Some folks make me think "Gosh, if that guy had gone to my high school, I guarantee he would not be such an arrogant prick today." And frankly, I think that's a somewhat systemic problem with the other sex. They don't go behind buildings to settle attitude problems. so the attitude problems are allowed to persist. guys who played sports, and particularly team sports, are MUCH easier to work with. Sorry if that's not PC, but it's my belief.
