Your kid will become an introverted lump: it's the law.

This just cracks me up. Let's take whatever risk there is to being a kid, growing up, learning from experience and hand it over to a few misguided school boards to handle.....

<b>Not it! Mass. elementary school bans tag</b>

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

<b>Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.</b>

This is just ****ing stupid. When I was growing up, we played "kill the guy with the ball" every day and no one ever got seriously hurt.

Soon, they will require children to wear helmets in school. A generation of pussies

This person needs to be caned for terminal stupidity.

An introverted, medicated lump.

And they wonder why we have child obesity problems? They've outlawed all of the activities where kids burn calories...

red-beard 10-18-2006 07:18 AM

Yeah "Kill the Carrier". That was great. At the bus stop, we used to war wrestle. Basically, running around and chasing everyone and piling on. But even games as these had rules (no clipping).

RickM 10-18-2006 07:24 AM

For me it was a game called Mug-a-Mite.

All the boys would get into a tight circle. The kid in the middle would yell a name. The named victim would have to run for his life as all the other were chasing him. When caught there was a Lord of the Flies type beating.

The strategy was to run faster than all the others because everyone would eventually lose interest.

If caught and mugged it would be your turn to get into the middle and yell the next name.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Which is why the current generation of kids will be a bunch of p*****s.

Dont worry. They can get it from TV. Why build a bike ramp when you have "jackass" on DVD?

Porsche-O-Phile 10-18-2006 07:40 AM

Oh, but think of the poor innocent children!

legion 10-18-2006 07:40 AM

Rick, do you have a link to the story?

Big Ed 10-18-2006 07:40 AM

This is un-freakin-believable.

BlueSkyJaunte 10-18-2006 07:41 AM

With a name like "Gaylene" what do you expect?

Why do I find that so funny? Near collisions? Sounds like "Not a collision" to me.

Nostril Cheese 10-18-2006 07:52 AM

speaking of Jackass, anyone ever duct tape a bunch of Estes "D" rocket engines to their bike or roller skates? We did.

I think you have to be over 18, have a pyrotechnics license, and a degree in nuclear physics to buy those now.

BlueSkyJaunte 10-18-2006 07:58 AM

And even then the Dept. of Homeland Defenestration still pays you a visit.

Rodeo 10-18-2006 08:04 AM

Um ... minor clarification. It's not "the law" that kids can't play tag, it's a stupid rule established by one school out of maybe a couple million schools in America.

Geez ... now I know why talk radio is so popular.

Carry on with your hand-wringing gentlemen ...

Rodeo 10-18-2006 08:06 AM

Personally, BTW, I would never allow my kids to play tag. It just reinforces outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society.

:)

RickM 10-18-2006 08:09 AM

A law is basically a rule.

The post was to bring attention to a trend that is only gaining momentum.

One school you say? Read the article....

"Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports."
