Select Comfort Bed? Just A Gimmick?

Wife wants a new bed, and a king now. I've been stalling on a new bed for, oh, about 10 years, so I guess it is time to give in.

Question - what do you guys think about those Select Comfort inflatable "sleep number" beds? We tried one out at the store, wife liked 40-50 and I liked maximum hard, actually I'd like a futon but she won't have it. Is it just a gimmick? Do they last? I'm thinking I don't want to buy the next bed until 2020.

Any other thoughts about beds would be welcome.

John, I have one of those and it is Da Bomb. I have problems with my neck and Beth (wife) has a bad back. This thing is great since we can each have what we need to sleep.
I used to be the type of person who's bed was plywood with a sheet on it. After buying this thing it is amazing how soft I need for the correct alignment of my neck. From a wounded cripple point of view get the bed.
The bad thing is it isn't very good for couples unless you both like the same suport. You will end up with a ledge in the middle of the bed, and if the person with the firmer side rolls near the middle they will end up falling off into the edge and onto the others side. Not to mention trying to knock boots.
Ok to sum it up. Great for sleep not good for he-ing and she-ing

Counter to Rick V...I had one for two weeks and HATED it. It reminded me of a water bed sans the water. Just like Rick said, there is a ridge in the middle and it makes it hard to get across the bed (King). When you move, you feel the air shift like a pool float. Was not for us; sent it back.
Father in law has one and loves it but they came from sleeping on a water bed.
Now my mom and dad just got a serious mattress from Serta. It has air chambers inside a convential mattress and it is really nice. You get the fullness of a standard pillow-top but you can make it firmer or softer with the air controller. Not cheap at 4k but a good nights sleep if worth a lot.

Counter to Rick and Ben.

I have had one for 4 years...i love it...my wife hates it...

and you better get the King size...i have a queen and it just doesnt have the Rollover capicity of a king. That can be annoying.

Considering a Memory foam top for mine....just to see if its more comfy. (Not the built in one...just an add on.)

We like ours.
Have had it for 3 years.
Have to pump it up for the best 'traction'.
Then go back to your 'number' for sleep.

Before rating a mattress, everyone should specify if they are a back-sleeper or a side-sleeper. Some mattresses work well for one and not for another.

I have a NordicII bed from European Sleep Works. I sleep on my side. I love the bed.

Don't buy a bed set for the technology, buy it because it feels right to you. I recently went through this same exercise. I ended up with a Simmons Beauty Rest Pillow Top Ultra Plush. Soft is good. Go to the store and lay on them. You will not be able to compare from one store to the next because they change the names relative to the store to avoid price shopping. And since you don't have to have it TODAY wait for a sale to buy it. I am a back sleeper, my wife sleeps on her side. The sleep number thing sounds like a gimmik.

My son has one and loves it. We have tempur-pedic (?sp) and love it. I've found that if you don't like one, you'll probably like the other. But best to look at them carefully before you buy.

Still, a good nights sleep = priceless.

Borat Accent

Here in Romania, we sleep on plywood and are greatful. A lot of people have to sleep on rocks, and not the soft kind either.

Borat Accent=off

After 4 months of not sleeping I took mine apart and put it on the curb. Best thing I can say about it was that it was easy to dispose of. I got put up in a Radisson (sleep number beds used exclusively) for a day last week and I didn't sleep there either

My wife and I have one, for about a year now, California King size, and love it. I finally got my wife to kick the water bed.

Get the electric mattress pad for winter, though not just for Sleep Comforts, for any bed. Makes things warm and toasty, then shut it off when you climb in.

Have you considered or tried the Tempurpedic (memory foam) ones? They're pricey but I guarantee my next mattress will be one of those.

I tried a friend's bed with a memory foam pad. I hated it. Laying on soft squishy stuff with the feel of decomposed meat is not my taste [shudder]. I like very firm beds. I grew up sleeping on the floor, and still like futons best of all. Bt the wife likes softer beds, pillowtop mattresses, etc. Was thinking the SCSS bed would be a good compromise.

P.S. Am a back sleeper.

We bought a SelectComfort "clone" from Nationwidemattress.com and we love it. We've actually purchased 4 of these beds from Richard at Nationwidemattress.com and are extremely pleased with all of them. The ComfortAire beds that Richard sells are cheaper than Select Comfort, but come with a longer warranty and a 90 day "try in your home or send it back" period that is critically important as selecting a comfortable mattress is very subjective.

Ever stayed in a Weston or W hotel?

1800Mattress or Mattress.com carries their matress'. I have a Sealy pillowtop right now that we purchased in an attempt to replicate the Westin beds.

Another factor you must consider with the air mattress or waterbeds and your size. My wife and I had a softsided water bed for years and never had an issue with it.

We sold it to some relatives and they were a lot heavier than us and they could never get it right. I also had a friend that had the air mattress deal and he weighed over 300 lbs and could never get comfortable on it.

Have had one for almost 9 years now. Wife and I both love it. We're both side sleepers with occasional forays into the back sleeper world.

My configuration keeps a pillow between my knees/ankles, one under my arm, and a down pillow under my head. Otherwise I end up on my back splayed out spread-eagle, taking up the whole bed. Guess I like to maintain minimal contact with myself?

When we operate on someone in the lateral decubitous position (forncy for on their side), we place pillows between their legs because that puts their pelvic girdle into more or less alignment with their spine. A pillow under your arm is called an "axillary roll" in surgery, it prevents impingement on the axillary nerve. The pillow under your head ideally will place your head in alignment with your cervical spine, in turn that in alignment with your thoracic spine. All the above assumes you've not had traumatic injury requiring unusual positioning. We do these things because the patient won't feel pain and move around during sleep, but if you're beginning to have position related pain, you're likely to wake up and relocate during the night. The pillows help reduce those awake periods, and I mostly do the same thing.

I bought something from sears that was a Sealy re-label. I had it through 3 wives, until I sold my condo in San Diego and my agent told me the mattress sold with the condo (Geez, think of the DNA! 3 wives, and the girlfriends in-between!). Anyway, wife is very happy that she is sleeping on a bed that only we have slept on...It's a 'pillow top' Sealy, but the pillow top is too soft for my taste. We bought an off brand bed from a local company in Houston for a guest bedroom, and I find it more comfortable than our regular bed.
