Fat Cops Get Feeling Hurt, Chief Fired
I wonder if the Department is decorated with flowery drapes and potpourri atop all the desks.

On its own, the memo contents presented in the article are not something that I would expect a firing over. I think the guy wanted to have a good police force, but the lowest performers won out.

I'm sure someone will chime in that it is unfair to the workers...er I mean police officers to set high standards. They shouldn't be expected to be capable of doing anything (public safety be damned!), merely occupy a seat for a set number of years until they can collect their pensions. The employer (city) should give the workers....cops whatever they want. A happy workforce is more important than a productive workforce.

The Chief is probably someone with higher expectations that the Department was use to, which probably made a lot of the slackers uneasy and resentful. It's Winter Haven, FL after all. Who expects to have to chase down a criminal or stop a bar brawl when the gray hairs out number the rest. Anyone can over take a motorized run about or a granny and a walker. When was the last time you got away from anyone, Jim?
![]() Edit: This is the same crap that goes on in the corporate world. A demanding manager is a bad one, but the one that can butter up the troops and keep them happy is a good manager. All the while the troops are slackers who could be replaced 2 for 1 by some college kid eager to learn and perform. There are too many compromises in the US work force, because we don't dare offend anyone. Last edited by MotoSook; 11-02-2006 at 05:49 AM.. |

This was on the local news around here last week. He was not fired, he quit. This was the final straw with this guy. There is more to the story than this one issue.

The multiplicity of complaints was mentioned in the article. Nevertheless, this smacks of political correctness.

I love this guy's message! I agree with him and encourage the cops I work with to work out as well. In fact, I put up a sign in the doorway that reads "Are you going to the gym today?"
