Glad to see the thread revived...

Mike, love your car. I have a Gran Prix white T also, but a 71MY.

Hey, I sold my 'six a couple of weeks ago. Had it for 11 years and was the first civilian owner. Tough to come to grips with selling my baby, which I am sure all Pelicans can understand. But the good news is that I am buying another one.:p This is the slug that I learned to fly warbirds in and also has a lot of history with me, so I am pumped about that. Another third world air force bird - ex Spanish Air Force. Sorry, no pics yet, but here is the one that is flying off into the sunset.

Why get rid of one just to replace it with the same. Is your new one better or was it simply a money making deal?

t6dpilot 02-16-2007 07:13 AM

Tim,
Straighter airframe, lower time engine (7515 is in need of an OH), and it has been in the family for 21 years. It had actually been sold and the deal fell through. Can you say serendipity? It was not meant to leave the family, so I sold mine instead. Tough decision, but in the end, the right one. I will give you a "tour" and maybe a ride :D at OSH this year.

I am actually delivering it to the Tri-State Warbirds Museum in Cincinnati, OH in the next week or so. The President of the museum is a very good friend of mine and actually assembled 7515 when it arrived from SA. He also maintained it for many years and is going to pull the engine for the new owner.

Aren't you close to Cincy? If so, I will let you know when I am going to be there.

Scott-

Nice shot of the T6. You must be excited to get going with that project, is there a lot to be done on it? Does the FAA have any problems with a foreign air force aircraft regarding maintenance records?

I talk about the Pinnacle accident with my other crewmembers a lot. It's sad that they just weren't paying attention and goofing off. From what I understand only one engine core locked, the other one was fine until they didn't follow the relight procedure correctly. Not that I would want to dead stick a CRJ 200 into a field but it seems like they rolled it over instead of flying it all the way in.

I wonder what will come of the Moscow accident. I don't mess around with ice at all, in fact all of the CRJ is considered a critical surface even the fuselage. The CR7 can go with contaminants on the fuselage but of course the wings/tail are critical.

Scott, I am just south of Toledo (TOL), so not so close and my grass runway (Eickmeier OH02) is drifted shut (except for my ski equipped ultralight :D )

bigchillcar 02-16-2007 08:20 AM

nothing like having your de-ice holdover time run out, sitting in a line of other jets, heavy blowing snow...taxi the hell back, repeat steps..lol. yeah, i miss those particular days..not! :)

BlueSideUp 02-16-2007 08:24 AM

It's even better now that we can't just exceed the holdover time, take a look at the wing and decide if it is contaminated. Now the FAA says if you've exceeded the holdover and it is still snowing you have to go back to get deiced again (even if your wing looks clean).

bigchillcar 02-16-2007 08:51 AM

it's been three years, but i seem to recall that we couldn't exceed our holdover time and make the call either, but i could be wrong. we neeeever just went anyway..haulin' seat covers, bolts, screws and verrrrry important wiring harnesses and whatnots for automakers in those days.. ;)

BlueSideUp 02-16-2007 09:27 AM

Yeah I flew with an FO who hauled car parts in a Convair for some company in PHX and Detroit. He said it involved some long hours in the wee early morning (never exceeded duty times I'm sure).

We used to be able to do an inspection if we exceeded the holdover.

Jim727 02-16-2007 09:29 AM

I still don't know why we don't adopt the European "car wash" system. I still remember sitting on the ramp waiting for the de-ice truck to show and spray, then get into line with stopwatch running. Much better where we would get in line first, then immediately before takeoff taxi under the de-ice "car wash". Nothing left to do but fly. It also was much more enviro-friendly as all the deice fluid was collected at that single point.

Hoss3.0 02-16-2007 09:38 AM

In Canada you can exceed a holdover time only if an inspection is made and the take off is conducted within five minutes of the inspection. But I think most people view this as pushing it. The CRJ doesn't have any holdover times for heavy snow, only moderate. That means if it's less than 3/4 SM vis in snow...you're sitting at the gate waiting to go. The 700/900 series is less critical because of the leading egde devices and different wing shape. But they are a common type so they must be operated the same way.

Most major airports in Canada have a central de-ice facility. Usually not too far from the runway. It works pretty well and the controllers don't let you off the gate until they know you will make it from the CDF non-stop (almost anyway) to the runway. It usually works well but has from time to time been referred to as the "Certain Delay Facility".

I don't know how I missed this one.

Here is a picture of my other toy. Bonanza's are the Porsches of the general aircraft world...over engineered, built well, fastest in their class and...parts costs a fortune.

nice v, porschepilot...throwover yoke or duals? i did a few instrument ratings in throwover v's back in the day. the first was a little 'hairy' to me, but got me through the nervousness..lol.

550?

t6dpilot 02-16-2007 02:00 PM

Porschepilot, love your Bonanza! Sure is pretty. I actually did a lot of shopping for one a couple of years ago - J model. Did not pull the trigger as one is enough.

Now, about Bonanza's being the Porsche of the air... I love Bonanzas, but have you ever flown a Bellanca Super Viking? That is a real sports car handling airplane (for cabin class). Remember Bobby Bishop and his aerobatic routine in the 70's? Extremely fast roll rate with phenominal acceleration - sounds like a 911, eh? Not taking away from the V-tail, but I grew up with my dad saying that Super Vikings are the Porsche of the air. As a kid, that stuck with me and I ended up buying one. They are great airplanes and I miss having one today.

Just fodder for discussion here. It is my opinion only and it like you know what, everyone has one.:D :D SmileWavy
