I'm not sure, but I'd bet your insurance company would tell you when you asked for a policy quote.

Jordi,

Friend of mine has a private L-39 and he loves it. Is a captain for Jet Blue so he has some jet time under his belt.

Its not difficult to fly but you need some background with planes and faster the better. There is a place in Santa Fe that will train people in the L-39 but do not know them. If you are interested can put the two of you in touch.

Problem is that supersonic is not allowed in the US by private airplanes. A LOA (letter of authorization) is required and the FAA nor military is not going to give it to anyone. Never has, doubt that it ever will.

Shoudn't take long to get out over international waters if you live on either coast. SS is legal then, no?

Yes, its legal off shore but how far you have to go to do this is a good question. Not my area.

Yah, I doubt that they'd let you go supersonic over Edwards (and run into some secret test flight).

I thought the Albatross also had some unique restrictions on it as well?

EDIT: That mini jet, the Eclipse looks pretty hot for the $. Wonder what you'd have to do before you could pilot one. Whadya think Joe?

I doubt they would let you fly over Edwards at all. Seems that it would be restricted. Would be cool to see some of the stuff in there.

Joe... I've been told that once you're past the ADIZ, hammer down. But then again, you lose the SS sensation when you're over water because you have no real references to go blasting past.

Thanks Joe but last thing I need is another hobby (and specially not something that has wings).

Still think that is a good price and the 'small' maintenance details (gas, upkeep, etc.) should not be much higher than having a CGT in the garage

Hehe...gf's grandfather used to fly those. They are quick as hell...in the straight line. He said landing is quite a fuss, it lands fast and needs lot's of training not to make a ground loop. They lost quite many of them in beggining. Think F-104 with ignition key between the seats.

That, and take a look at the fuel line size to the engine. I can just about guarantee that it looks close to the diameter of a fire hose.

The Eclipse looks nice and should be easy to fly. Problem is that if you do not have descent time, and that means at least 500 hours flying, the insurance will reflect this.

Planes like this will change private aviation in the next years, if we have enough fuel and the price is reasonable that is.

BeepBeep, I have a lot of friends who flew the Starfighter. Joke in Germany was... "How do you get your own personal Starfighter? Buy a plot of ground near an airport and just wait!" They lost a lot of them due to the experience level needed. It landed at 180 mph or so and something like that needs a very good pilot.

Regarding flying over Edwards. I have done it many times, it just depends on if they are "hot" or not.
