"Shoot it the next time.......aim carefully". Call animal control immediately, your dog is trying to eat children!

Grab the dog's tongue. That has worked in the past for me.

Yet, my roommate's dog still barks whenever I am in the room. I have been spraying a combination of water and hot sauce in it's face when the roommate is away. She stays away from me now.

Maybe just let the kids decide for themselves if they're bothered by dogs licking them and tell your wife to stop obsessing about things that don't matter?

Yea I'm sayin'. That's ruthless....in the mouth maybe, but the face in general is bad.

My kids are 1 and 2, they couldn't stop her if they wanted to.

Sounds to me like it's the wife that needs training. If the kids don't care then it's her problem. Dogs do have cleaner mouths than we do.

Dog licking is a bonding thing. It's one of the things that dogs use when establishing they heirarchy. I'd say it's better to let the dog lick the kids than not.

The kids care sometimes and sometimes they don't, but the problem is that the dog is many times more powerful than they are so it's up to the dog when to stop.

And I believe the idea that a dogs mouth is cleaner than ours is an old wives tale (more like different germs rather than less germs).

Actually the mythbusters tested it and it seems to be true. The MB had a dog and a human lick a petri dish that had growth media on it. They then incubated the petri dishes for a period. At the end of the period the dish that the human had licked was covered in colonies of stuff but the dish that the dog had licked had a few speckles of colonies.

My guess is that it has to do with the fact that dogs put all sorts of stuff in their mouths so their mouths/saliva have to have some sort of natural antiseptic quality.

I gotta wonder if licking ones anus negates the extra saliva?

Dogs identify, greet and show ownership through licking. I have one dog that licks everything in the house. If we bring something new in like the groceries they get licked. We get scared if it doesn't get the lick of approval from her.

Unless it is harming the kids I wouldn't worry about it. As stated above there mouths are cleaner than ours. If it is harming the kids then use some type of training technique associated with a command. They will always try to lick, but if you can stop them with a command you man be able to limit it.

Anyway, here is a scenerio:

Wife and one year old are playing in the living room. Wife leaves to put clothes away in the bedroom while the one year old plays with his toys.

Wife comes back a few minutes later to find the dog has the child pinned down licking his face. Not in a harming way at all, but relentless.

That's the part that annoys me when my puppy licks....I kinda like it up to a point but enough is enough.

Dogs do have an 'antiseptic' component to their saliva...it's usually a bit slimy though. Dog's w/o this develop dental problems and bad breath much sooner than ones that do have it. Seen it enough to know.

The anal licking, then to face of, say a child, ain't cool. Can transmit more than bacteria. Round worm eggs (and hook worms too) from dogs can cause serious problems in children. Don't complete the cycle but migrate to other parts of the body. Kinda rare as I recall but possible none the less... Good sanitation and hygeine is always the way to go here.

Buy/build a doghouse. Dog cant lick the kids from outside. Dogs should be outside most of the time anyway.

If she licks 'aggressively', you might want to reconsider
