Open Carry - California Style

Well, ya gotta be very careful about where you are treading...but the law of the land in California allows open carry of firearms in un-incorporated areas. This is actually one thing where California is more lax on gun laws, than Texas.

I guess I should have taken pictures! But my Full Size Springfield 1911-A1 followed me all over Madera and Mariposa Counties the past few days...

Gotta work on open carry in Texas!

That's kind of one of the best kept secrets in Washington as well; we are one of the most liberal carry states. CCW's are under a "shall issue" imperitive where if you are not a convicted felon, drug addict, or certifiable lunatic, the local authority in charge must issue one within a prescribed period after your petition for one. We also get to carry openly when hiking, fishing, and of course, hunting. I'm not sure about the unincorporated areas, though. I'll have to look into that.

Jeff, are you saying that you can carry without a CCW while hiking?

thats the beauty of arizona...............anywhere.............anytime .......carrying open.

concealed carry...........anywhere.........anytime........wi thin prescribed rules and w/permit. schools, airports, bars, restaurants that serve booze, nuke plants, military bases(check them at guard post), fed/state/county buildings(voted in all the aforementioned facilities must have lockable lockers for us ccw holders to place in while conducting biz). actually our laws allow good guys w/permit to go onto school grounds w/weapon and leave LOCKED in vehicle when conducting official biz.

this state has made it very easy for ccw owners to carry anywhere........anytime. vehicles whatever.

when and if the "RECIPROCAL" law takes effect and gathers steam in other states, it will make it much easier to carry. right now i can cruise thru nevada-utah-colo-new mex-texas with permit and gun and never worry about a thing driving.

the cops here in arizona for the most part LOVE CCW holders. we are sworn to back them up if the poo hits the fan! so the couple of times i have been caught speeding, they just tell me to slow down. one time late for airport i was flying around 75 in a 45 zone. looked at me, asked me why i was in hurry, told him, airport, and he let me go.

when pulled over pre CCW and asked about weapons, i stated yes, it was the usual get out of car, back up arrives, car plates and vin run, me run for warrants, gun run thru NCIC computer. and then your off. when pulled over here in arizona they know by your plate you are CCW holder and they are real cool about it. before CCW their hands were on gun approaching car everytime, unless backup was there.

You can carry concealed in CA without a permit when traveling to and from hunting, and while hunting. You can also carry concealed without a permit, off your own property when going to the aid of another, such as if your neighbor is being assaulted and you go to help them.

None of the above will prevent you being charged, keep that in mind, but that's the law and is a "positive defense".

Yup, there you have it. I have never so much gone on a day hike without a sidearm. I've spoken with many Forest Service rangers, DOW officers, and what not at the trailhead, in the parking lot, or wherever. At all times with my sidearm clearly visible to them. In 20+ years of this, not a one has ever even mentioned it. Oh, except for one. We started discussing the merits of the traditional Keith type semi-wadcutter vs. the newer LBT type wide flat nose. He was a gun nut and my Ruger single action caught his eye.

I forgot to add, we do NOT have open carry in South Carolina except when hunting, or on your own property or in your own vehicle.

I'm all about open carry everywhere. I think CCW should really be a license to open carry. That way only really stupid criminals would be a threat. Then the Darwin effect comes into play. Every day would be like a Texas BBQ!

"Texas BBQ" - HA!

It's funny, since you'd thin, with all of the stories, that Texas is the wild west. What isn't well known is that Texas had some of the most restrictive firearm laws until 10 years ago when CCW was passed.

In many states, CCW laws cover just that: Concealed wespons. Many have no regulations at all regarding a gun strapped on in plain view.......Rifles are regulated even less.

Many times, someone heading to or from a pawn shop is walking down the sidewalk with a rifle. No law against it...

since we have been trained to "print " people(whos carrying and whos not), it kinda becomes a game to us when out in public to identify those who are carrying concealed.

the dumbest thing you can do is have a fanny pak with pak in front..........dead giveaway to all.

the coolest carry method is the "daytimer" offered by dillon mfg.. wayyy cool and no one even has a clue your carrying. the object is to carry CONCEALED!

its more than likely in this gun scared world if someone say in walmart or your local grocery store sees your weapon they will say something that may lead to cops being called! then it will get wierd until things sorted out.

dillon also makes the "CYA" holster which is great for full size .45 cannons. great for walking etc. bad for driving with. bianchi makes some cool shoulder holsters for driving applications and walking applications or running.

my springfield micro-compact .45 cannon uses a bianchi "FBI" forward angle holster w/thumbstrap for carrying one in pipe. very slim. lot of times will carry in crack of a$$ or just place on carry belt w/hawaiian shirt. nobody is the wiser.

the only time i carry open, is hunting...........period. all other times its concealed.

now for the question of the day. have to go to san jose, calif. to pick up vehicle w/trailer. will take .45. i know in kalif. you must have weapon disabled. rounds not w/weapon. so my idea is mags in center console and gun in camper shell unloaded. take both into hotel room at night and i should be legal????? am i right?

I guess a de-horned gun and a snag-free front sight become somewhat more important as well. It might get pretty tough to get a clear sight picture with a big ol' hairy klingon for a front bead.

LMFAO klingons??? wtf? we are civilized here! we actually spend money on a paper product called TOILET PAPER! LOL!

dillons CYA holster attaches to rear pant belt for secure running carry or can be shoved down "plumbers crack".

CYA holster real popular with my cop amigos in my NAU class, when they go undercover here. CYA a pain in A$$, when driving. i remove and just place weapon in console, then place back in when exiting vehicle. now that its winter carrying is easy. summer time.......a little more of a challenge. man we have been doing this for years now, and you get REAL GOOD AT IT!

love busting my friends who have CCW's when they print! so its kinda a game to all of us to really avoid "PRINTING" like the plague. and i have seen some pretty unique ways to carrying concealed very big pistoles!

I have always just used the old "border carry". Cram whatever I'm carrying into my waistband behind my strong-side hip. Seems to work quite well with a full size 1911, a 4 3/4" Peacemaker, or my little Charter Arms Bulldog Pug. It makes it pretty easy to quickly re-arrange things for sitting in a car, in a restaurant, or wherever. Probably not the best if I ever had to run, or got into a brawl, but at my age I avoid both. Up here in the rainy PNW it is pretty easy to conceal full-size sidearms most of the year.
