That would qualify as the understatement of the day. When I added up all of the time and $$ that my 911 sucked out of my life when I owned it, I was appalled. Owning an old 911 is a hobby, like golf, if you have the upgrade and DIY disease that this website and our host's company is built on. If you have a bone-stock 911 and/or one that sits in the garage and is never or rarely driven, this does not apply to you. In my case, (and a lot of members on the tech board), it made heroin addiction look downright practical and thrifty.

So the whole bean-counter argument is BS, we buy cars that we want to buy. I do not know anyone that wants a new Corolla, but tons of people who can afford a new 997 want Priuses. At least around here. I wouldn't mind one, they are extremely cool. Everyone I know that has one raves about it, from the luggage/interior space to cool technology to MPGs, etc..

The "time to pay for" argument is a pile of schit, WTF do I buy gas for $2.00 a gallon? Do I have to travel to a red state to fill up? Do you think that oil products are going to come down in price in the future, therefore diminishing the resale value of a Prius? Did you factor in the resale value of a Corolla vs. Prius? (An essential part of any $$/miles driven equation)? And the only fair comparison is vs. a Camry, although it is not apples/apples. The Prius is a lot cooler car.

The market speaks loudest. I don't see a lot of new Jeep Cherokees around here, but sometimes there are 3-4 Priuses parked next to each other in my neighborhood. YMMV, of course, out in the middle of nowhere where trends are formed.

They could also be making the statement that they would rather give their money to an innovative car company than some POS oil company and a bunch of terrorists.

Obviously "cool" is a subjective term

I take a little bit different stance:

I drive a pick-em-up truck with a V8. I like driving a truck. it has a whole lot more room inside than a prius, it has a whole lot more power, it sits high up enough that other drivers can see it, it's safer in a crash, and i get 17 mpg. I paid $25k for it.

To offset the price of fuel and everything else, I buy oil company stocks. Fuel doesn't cost me anything. If the price at the pumps goes up so do my stocks, but even more so. Unfortunately for some doing this takes away the opportunity to say "oh poor me, I'm a victim and a martyr".
I personally would rather be an envied winner than a pitied loser.

To me the only advantage a prius has is the HOV lane, and that's if you were lucky enough to get a sticker.

Double grin...here's my trash hauler...single digit mileage around town, 10-12 highway. No prius has ever tried to crowd me.

Mikey, my post wasn't directed at you or meant to be negative towards prius owners. It was part of a thread avout the benefits of a hybrid.

My post was trying to make two points:
1) The cost of fuel does not affect my decision what to drive. Any money saved by driving a hybrid (for a long time) would be dwarfed in comparison to investment income.
2) for me, a prius does not make sense. I prefer a truck.

in no way did i ever intend to try to dictate to anyone else that they should or should not drive a hybrid. That's none of my business.
I was only stating what works for me and why.

And I wish to stress that my post was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
