ROCKY MOUNT, VA. — A Virginia congressman said Thursday he will not retract his letter to constituents in which he said unless immigration is tightened "many more Muslims" will be elected to office.

Rep. Virgil Goode, a Republican who represents the 5th District, triggered angry responses from an Islamic civil rights group and some of his colleagues by his letter to constituents who e-mailed him about a new Minnesota congressman's decision to use the Quran at his private swearing-in ceremony.

"I will not be putting my hand on the Quran," Goode told a news conference Thursday.

In a letter earlier this month to hundreds of constituents about Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, Goode warned that strict immigration policies are necessary "to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America."

"The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Quran."

Scary because the congressman is predicting the same political upheaval that France, Germany and the Netherlands are already experiencing, or scary because the southern redneck is bigot who needs a lesson in political correctness?

I find it scary that an elected official to our government could care one way or the other what someone's religion is.

Last I heard we had freedom of religion and could be any one we choose.

I'm against illegal immgration myself but not against muslims.

I'm also against people who kill other people but I'm still not against muslims.

I'm not against a muslim using a Quran instead of a bible at his swearing in ceremony. After all what difference does it make what he swears on? They guy's a politician - he's probably lying anyway.

I am FOR people being free to worship as they please. I read that a student asked the guy why he didn't have a Quran in his office...he had some hard-line anti muslim answer where the real answer is probably more like the fact that he's not a muslim so why would he? Duh.

I draw the line at allowing people to 'worship as they choose' with those that saw the living heads off of peaceful Americans.

I don't see the connection between immigration & Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, he was never a immigrant, he converted is my understanding. I think Rep. Virgil Goode is living up to the stereotype of a good-ole-boy southerner.

No one that i know of.

There HAVE been several muslim terrorists RIGHT HERE in America that HAVE maimed and killed Americans in the name of "Allah" though.

They just caught one planning to set off grenades in a mall in Chicago on Xmas eve last week.

Exactly. It's an issue, but to address the issue, you need to accurately assess it first. It is indeed a lot of people, but assigning the guilt of the 300,000 onto the billion innocents isn't going to accomplishing anything useful.

I hate to point this out miss "She of the deluded mind", but 1% of 1.4 billion is not 300,000.

It's 14,000,000.

So by your own figures, there are 14,000,000 head sawing Islamists running around with suicide vests and/or burning cars as we speak.

But you're right.....Islam poses no threat to us.
