Am I being a dick?

So my nephew and wife are coming over for Xmas. The last time they brought their PIA miniature daughsund. The dog terrorizes my cats, runs all over the house up and down the stairs, through the yard and back up and down the stairs, hell we take off our shoes off on the upstairs carpet. The dog barks at everything! Its your typical couple w no kids and the dog is their "baby" No discipline.

They asked if they can bring "rocky" I said no!
Am I a dick??

My nephew and his wife certainly think so.
They are dressing him up as a reindeer, who gives a &^&$

No. You are not.

We have the same situation in our family with my wife's brother. A dog does not HAVE to be welcome & they should understand.

I don't think so, it's their pet not yours so you shouldn't have to put up with it.

Deep down they probably know he is a PITA and that is why they asked if they can bring him over.

Can I bring my eight foot boa consticter over for Christmas dinner? He's so cute.

It's your house, you pay the bills, you do the repairs, you are to dictate what goes on in your house.

IMO, not being a dick.

So the answer is, you're probably right to tell them "no". But to answer your question...you are probably still a dick.

your house, your rules. If they don't like it, they don't have to come.

I don't allow people to smoke in my place, and I don't allow them to bring their own animals either. My cat Milo rules this roost. Plus they have to take off their shoes at the front door.

man, I'm a dick...

I don't think your being a dick.

I think anyone that would bring an animal to someone elses house that causes chaos, and probably thinks its cute.....now that person is a dick.

Just tell them the truth (maybe with a bit of diplomacy).
"Sorry guys, but we would really prefer it if Rocky stays home this time. He's great, but the last time he was here, he gave me a migraine, terrorized our cats, and tracked dirt all over the upstairs carpet. I hope you can understand..."

If they still get all butt-hurt, tell them:
"Fine bring the little fucher, then for New Years, we'll come over to your place with the Rottweiler and Bull Mastiff I've had my eye on at the pound. Sound like a deal?"

We put up a child gate to keep the pets out of the living room.

It was polite of them to ask.

It would be impolite of them to become indignant over your response.

I agree, you're the host, you have valid reasons - you set the rules. Just tell them you're sorry but the dog has been a problem in the past and although you enjoy them and their company, you're opening your home to enough chaos and disruption without adding to it unnecessarily.

I'm sure someone can take care of the dog or watch it for a few hours. What's the big deal?

BTW FWIW I have friends that own daughsunds and while they are very cute and entertaining in their own way like most small dogs they are hyper and can be quite a handful.

Seems unreasonable for them to want to impose on you to put up with rocky.

Let me expand on the eight foot Boa constrictor idea... maybe you could borrow one from a pet store or local zoo. Then meet your nephew and rocky at the door with your new pet and introduce him as Bullwinkle "I'm sure the two of them will get along just fine"

You're well within your rights to say "No Dog". It's your house, and visitors shouldn't bring pets.

My wife's sister and bro-in-law won't come to visit us, since we said that they couldn't bring their miserable miniature dachshund, as we have cats. Every time I see the yappy thing, I find myself pondering "drop kick or punt"?

We don't bring our cats when we visit them, so it's only fair.

I had a similar situation with my wife's uncle, but they never got around to asking me because they knew the answer would be "no".

I would allow the dog to stay in the carrier in the garage, but when we moved into this house we gave away our own dog. I don't want animals in my house.

Uncle was pretty understanding, and we had a nice time.

No I don't think you're being a dick. But I am puzzled as to why your nephew is bringing your wife to dinner?
