Well, it is tough to ride in a car on a track as a passenger, particularly after lunch. I know of several people that have ridden with instructors at DE's who have at least gotten nauseous. It's not the same as when you're behind the wheel.

As context:

My first-ever DE was at Streets of Willow with the PCA. Klaus Holthaus was one of the instructors. He's been involved in professionall racing since the sixties, I believe, so he certainly had the stomach for going fast on a track. But that day one of his students made him sick. As he explained it, it wasn't even that the driving was particularly bad. Sometimes it's just the right amount of movement combined with the right environmental (and gastronomical) factors.

My brother introduced me to racing karts when I was a kid. He was always faster than me, and has come out a few times to co-drive BB2 with me. He runs very respectable times (although he's not faster than his kid brother anymore), but as a passenger at Thunderhill, he got sick after less than two laps. He had good puking skills -- he got it all out the window very cleanly.

When I took Chris out, we deliberately went to the back of the pack (I'm not sure if it was a blue or red run group) and I made a point of passing pretty much the entire field (so it was probably blue) before his stomach started to have trouble. So, for starters, you had a show-off driver throwing the car around a lot. And in Chris's defense, he told me we needed to go in -- and I misunderstood what he'd said. (I hadn't given him my usual 'tug at my sleeve if you're feeling like you're going to get sick' talk.) If I'd heard him correctly, we would have been in the paddock before the Rosamond-gourmet lunch made its return.

As it was, he gave me lots of warning, and we were able to get off line and into the dirt for all three of the stops to, uh, 'toss out an apple' (as they describe it on the tape).

We're all vulnerable to it -- I usually won't go out with a student in the first session after lunch for that exact reason. But Chris handled it very well, not leaving anything behind in BB2. He's on par with my own brother in puking skills.
