We used to say it in the early 1970's in Jr. High School, "bro" was more common though.

I was friends with several Hawaiians during college and most would call me HaoleBrah - which was fine by me and was as close to "brah" as I'd ever get. It was okay for me to call them "cousiiin" but I wouldn't presume to call them "brah".

I don't remember how I learned this, but I'd guees that one of them took pity on me and explained it before I made a complete a$$ out of myself.

The differences can be hugh. Over a break some of them rented a car and drove 6 hours just to see snow.

Yeah, and Mrs. Z-man is hooked on that TV show - it's our little guilty secret....

Actually, his (Dog the Bounty Hunter's) approach is interesting - He bashes doors down, and captures fugitives with an 'in your face' attitude, and then on the ride to the Police station does his best to try to get the criminal to turn their life around. Gotta give him props for helping these folks...

IIRC, he was arrested because he is wanted by the Mexican Government for tracking down and capturing a criminal wanted in the U.S. without an extradition treaty. I say we turn him over when they turn over all of the criminals hiding out in Mexico.

Fro Wiki;

"At approximately 6:00 am Hawaiian time on September 14, 2006, Duane Chapman, his son Leland and Tim Chapman (not related)[2] were arrested by US Marshals at the request of the Mexican government. Duane, Leland and Tim were arrested for bounty hunting, which is illegal in Mexico. On June 18, 2003, the Chapman trio captured convicted fugitive rapist Andrew Luster (heir to Max Factor cosmetics), who had fled to Mexico. Luster is currently serving a 124 year prison sentence for raping three women. Duane, Leland and Tim have since been released on bail ($300,000 for Duane and $100,000 each for the other two). An appeal date has now been set for early January"

the term is most definitely hawaiian in origin. 'brother' was the black term, 'brah' the hawaiian. the adoption/dilution of hawaiian culture is a sort spot with natives. it really took off in the 60's, fueled by jetliners and tv (hawaii 5-0, later magnum).

it is a term locals use for their friends. somewhat similar to the n word with blacks. and some of the same sensitivites surround it. if you're whit and say, hey nigger, what's up, you'll get pounded. same if you say, hey brah, howzit to a moke.

Back in junior high it was a "cool" greeting among the surfers and wannabees.

"Hey, brah. Let's go explore green room"
"Totally...brah"

what so tough about da kine? another hawaiian term from 'the kind' meaning the best.

part of being a socal native...lots of island bleed that I take for granted. I remember having that in the lexicon growing up in the 60s/70s.

A good friend of mine, back in the 80's, who was an old man then, had a restored 60's Datsun pick-up with "Da Kine" in gold leaf on both front fenders.

Tequila sunrise, metallic paint job.

I thought Da Kine could mean anything, iow, it could be used in a variety of contexts to mean different things.

No?

Yes. As can the word "f*ck." But both have a literal translation.
