So wait... is the tank still there or has that been moved as well? |

I would have to say 17.5 quarts with Chris's foot heater. The silver car has some secrets that I am sworn to silence on. It takes a very sharp eye to spot them even with a trained eye. Considering when the car was constructed even by todays standards it has many things that are not your average performance modifications. Well thought out, slippery through the air and light weight. Some tires, a few hose's, refurb the fuel distributor and spritzen's and it would breath fire again in no time. Two weeks! As far as Chris's balcony? The whole place is a little piece of heaven on top of the world. Mr. and Mrs. Banning are always gracious host's and make you feel welcome with each visit. |

Porsches don't need water to run
Yesterday morning, Dave came over to see what was wrong with the white 911. Here the car is ready to take apart with tools nearby.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196957272.jpg Here is the left chaincase, note the tensioner is almost all the way out. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196957090.jpg This is the right chaincase, it also has a way extended tensioner. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196957115.jpg It took about two hours to take apart and diagnose. Dave and I found water pouring out of the sump after the oil was finished pouring out. Bad News! Water also inside the oil tank, great. Foggy nights with the 911 in the carport created lots of condensation inside the motor and tank. Time for a rebuild. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196957137.jpg Dave's car looks great since he used clay to get his paint like new. Thanks for coming over Dave. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196957166.jpg |

HMMM, I see lots of special stuff at first glance.

This is not Mulholland related but speed/thrill related for sure and most impressive. It is our newest USAF Fighter Aircraft, the F/A-22 Raptor.
Fast ( super-cruise* ) and stealthy, and loaded with integrated avionics which are way cool, but what's really impressive is the F/A-22's low speed stability and maneuverability. Back in the late 40's into early 60's aeronautical engineers were going berserk on how to make and shape intakes to handle both subsonic and super-sonic air flow, without suffering stagnation or compressor stalls. Supersonic flight in itself is a big challenge because you have to use shock waves to slow the intake air mass to sub-sonic speeds before it hits the engine compressor blades, or they will stall. The engineer brainiacs figured it all out and the solution was keeping a lot of air going in the front end and to make sure all the hot air kept going out the exhaust. As you watch this Mach 2 airplane suspend practically motionless in air and do tail slides, be aware of the truly amazing performance of the engines and air intakes. Some used to think the Su-27 / Su-31 "Cobra" maneuver was the "Bee's Knees" of 3rd to 4th generation fighter maneuverability. That particular snap maneuver doesn't hold a candle to what the F-22, two-dimensional vectored-thrust fighter, with broad independent horizontal stabs, can do at low speeds. There has to be more tricks up its aerodynamic sleeve in the high subsonic dogfight speed ranges...something the Air Force wants to keep quiet about at the moment. The video below is about 5 minutes long but the last 30-40 seconds are priceless. http://www.f22-raptor.com/media/video_gallery/videos/F22_AirShow_Langley.wmv ACC ( Air Combat Command (for the non-Air Force types ) recently approved the Raptors new DEMO flight profile. This was the first public showing for the airplane. Watch the elevators of the airplane in this flight demo. They work independently. It also has vectored thrust. * The F/A-22 can sustain supersonic flight without the use of fuel-gulping afterburners (Supercruise). |
thanks chris. i haven't been to an airshow in years so it was nice to see that flight demo. especially since i've worked on a couple of the f-22's systems.

Thanks for posting that, Chris.
Very impressive! It looks like it's doing VTOL type maneuvers. |
More Mulholland imagery
Actually this is over at the Mount Lee part of Mulholland between the Hollywood Resevoir and Griffith Park. When Mul went from Hwy to Drive they never renamed the east section. Cool sign. Might not be there tomorrow! Quest for signs! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197153348.jpg |

No, Jeff isn't going to go get legitimate signs that are current. He is referring to getting one of the old "Dusk til Dawn" signs that used to be along the racecourse. I called Chuck Turner in Hawaii and he told me that he personally hack-sawed at least 30 of them and threw them off the valley side of Mulholland. That was in 1985. They are still down there to this day. I did a little recon at Grandstands today with binoculars to see if I could find anything, the foliage is not yet grown out from the recent rain. Here's the familiar view looking towards Bowmont. By the way the Paparazzi are visible to the left of Bowmont. They have been hanging out there daily waiting for Madonna or? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197341660.jpg Here's a view of the Sweeper from the Barbara Fine Overlook (behind the old Grandstands). Look just below the turn on the right about 75 feet down. There is a ledge with a small road coming from the bottom of the canyon. Maybe someone lived in a shack there a long time ago. Lots of old trash dot the hillside just over Mulholland. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197341726.jpg I thought that this was interesting, also from the Barbara Fine Overlook. In this image Deadmans is at the top right of the picture with Carls Jr at the far upper right. If you look carefully, you can see a large palm tree growing out of the landscape. To the right of the palm is grove of walnut trees. In that grove of trees are three badly rusting classic cars that long ago went over the hill. They are visible with binoculars. You can see for yourself if you look from the overlook with at least 10 power. I wonder what stories those cars would tell if they could speak. My wife and I have hiked the trails below deadmans before and have found rusting hulks there but I would have not expected to see these cars so far down below Carls Jr. It must have been one heck of a ride. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197341785.jpg |
Hmm, I have to get the 911 ready for Wednesday at Willow, maybe I'll go up there tomorrow and take a trip down the hill. Ticks should be gone for the season as should Rattle snakes.
I'll keep an eye out for signs. Dave |

Me too. I need a Mul. sign. I've paid my dues in as much as my 2 deers, and one destroyed car.

Chris,
This will blow everyone away. Circa 1979 or 80 Carls Turn/ Mid pits First photo scanned as photographed: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197347608.jpg 2nd photo highlighted: You will notice chute #1 and #2 leading down the hill around Mid pit. This is the path of the "off roaders" and resulting scarring of the earth as they went over the side. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197347633.jpg If you look closely at the area circled you can make out at least three or four wrecked cars at the bottom piled on top of each other. One hell of a drop! Chute #1 had some erosion from runoff as the pocket at Carls was a waterfall when it rained. This pic was taken in the summer and as plainly seen a lot of off road trails were left behind in the carnage. These 3 areas highlighted and deadmans would be the obvious area's to search for signs. Today the area is different as you can see in this photo. The area I call chute #1 is obscured by vegetation. The road bed at Carls was moved over about 6 feet due to erosion at the east apex and the (chute #1) was concreted in to limit the scouring caused by runoff. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197348443.jpg And for posterity those tour buses are everywhere and annoying me! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197348540.jpg |
A couple more.......
A long gone memory..... Grandstand's before the berm looking towards Carls Turn. You could follow the cars all the way through the course with no interuption. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197349169.jpg Remember when you could park at Grandstands and look at the city lights towards Burbank and Glendale without getting out of your car? Very few were lucky to experience that. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1197349619.jpg |
