After some searching thru drawyers, the original material (neoprene) was located along with a sheet of cork. I remember that the cork didn't work well.
The neoprene sheet was placed into the bottom of this drawyer in 1976 for some day when it would be needed again. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213867.jpg Here's the original 32 year old neoprene fuel gasket next to the sheet it was cut from long ago. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213888.jpg Using the old one as a template, a new one is constructed with little difficulty. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213909.jpg Careful cutting resulted in a slightly larger and better fitting fuel gasket. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213926.jpg Here it is finished and ready to go. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213944.jpg Went for a drive today. Dave M. followed, thanks for the assistance Dave. |
Hey Chris, it's ready if you want to come pick it up.

WOW!! Those pics at Deadmans are priceless. It's great to see that car back in action again. It was just a picture in a magazine from my childhood, now a reality. Way cool!! Congratulations Chris, and thank you for the little gift. I thought there was just one for Dave, until I realized there were 2. Too cool! I can't wait to hear the Carrera running down the road. And yes, kudos to Derek for starting this thread, and getting all the motivation and support going for the Carrera.

Wow!!!
I go away for a week and all hell breaks loose :<0 Chris, great to see THE car back on the hill after it's long slumber. Congrats!!! Derek, the chicks and the tourists in the jeep witnessed history in the making and didn't even know it ;>) This made my day, can't wait for a ride. I am happy, Kiley |
Great to see the car back on the road!
Ok, I'll bite: What's with the smoke? George |

Let's not discuss the possibilities and just hope that it's oil burning off, from having sat idle for so many years. |
smoke

It had drained back from the front oil tank (16 quarts) over the years. Gunk was used to attempt to clean all the oil out of the exhaust, but some remained. The car probably just needs to be driven longer, with a few more 8000 rpm slam shifts. |
good ol' italian tune-up

Old Mulholland postcards
I found more old Mulholland stuff.
Here are two old postcards. The first postcard is a very early photo of the Mulholland Dam. You'll notice that there are no houses except for the Damkeepers house next to the west dam abutment. A couple of Ford Model T's? are on the Dam itself along with a few people walking on it. This road around the resevoir was the first Mulholland Drive and existed before the Mulholland Drive we know of was even built. The area that was to become the Mulholland Drive we know, is visible in the distance. Radu's house is just off the photo to the left and about 50 years into the future. The photo was taken around 1925. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231350820.jpg This old linen postcard is of the Mulholland Fountain located near Griffith Park. It's still there today and has a most beautiful display of water and colored lights that can be seen at night. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231350848.jpg |
Porsche work
Went by Kevin's shop this morning. He was busy at work on a Porsche Racecar.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231365771.jpg There is always a few unique and interesting Porsche projects in various stages of restoration. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231365795.jpg This Porsche rotisserie is very cool. That could really come in handy when working on the underside of a 911. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231365819.jpg |
Whale Tail repair
Kevin repaired the Carrera's Whale Tail yesterday with fiberglass.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231366145.jpg The latch bulkhead has been loose for 20 years. Kevin repaired it better than new. He added fiberglass cloth to strengthen the joint. Very clean job. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231366166.jpg After taking acetone to wipe away old paint and dirt, we discovered that the Tail was made by Omnidesign (circa 1975). Kevin remembered that Omnidesign was in competion with A.I.R. back in the 70's. Both companies produced fiberglass parts for racing Porsches. Back then, Kevin worked for A.I.R. My car was at their shop for two weeks in 1976 while Danny M. looked over the slant roof design of the Carrera. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231366187.jpg I had a great time talking Porsches with Kevin as always. He is very knowledgable and skilled at all forms of body restoration. Usually no one does any work on the car but myself but in the hands of an artist like Kevin, it's OK with me and the Carrera. Thank you again Kevin for repairing the Tail. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231366210.jpg |
Looking at that picture Chris reminds me of how much younger I used to be.

Brake pads
After being informed that Original Porsche brake pads were unavailable for the rear and front pads available only from Germany, I felt somewhat setback.
So I went to see Dave and Jeremy at TRE Motorsports for advice since they are experts with Porsche replacement parts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231531990.jpg There are always beautiful Porsches in the parking lot. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532016.jpg Inside, there are many cool Porsche projects being completed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532035.jpg Here is one of their top mechanics working on this racecar. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532054.jpg |
Brake pads
Dave and Jeremy had excellent brake pads for the Carrera, made with a ceramic compound.
Jeremy said that his brother Tony (who I have known for a long time) loved those pads on his Porsche. Jeremy sent Tony a set and he almost went thru the window. I can't wait to try them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532749.jpg Here's Jeremy next to his incredibly beautiful 930. The light blue interior with the dark blue exterior looks great. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532769.jpg This deep forest green offered on the early cars looks so nice I had to take a picture of this very clean 911. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532790.jpg Here is one of Dave's Porsche racecars. Jeremy went down the list of cool modifications for me but there were so many it's hard to remember them all. The car has coil over shock suspension, big red brakes, flush rear window, roll cage, 996? motor, custom bodywork, and much more. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532815.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231532834.jpg |
