Telephoto of the area between Carls Turn and Mid Pits. Signs? We got signs, we have trash and all sorts of stuff.

So funny,Ilove Bob ,but I believe it was my Lotus Elan @ Muholland Drive conversation that turned Bob Hall around. Bob told me how could you sell your BRE 510 to buy this English piece of junk? I responded,Bob you are nuts! Colin Chapmans Elan is timless,40 years from now that car is still beautifull.

Well Ladi Da Bob becomes a consultant for Mazda,RX7 sales are down and Genious Bob has a brain storm, Re Create the Elan. Where did he come up with that Zinger? From me. If Bob is the father of the Miata then I'm the Grandfather. I'm over it.

If you ever want to fly.

Mulholland Drive.

Up in the sky.

Stand on a cliff and look down there.

Don't be scared.

.You are alive.

Stipe says he associates the sight of the city from on high with "a blanket of stars or those bizarre sea creatures that light up when you stir up the water."

"Mulholland is the place in films where you get a distance and the awe, of the city built on dreams and fantasy," says Stipe, adding, "far away enough to not smell it but to marvel at its intensity and sheer audacity."

ALMOST two miles past the Sepulveda Pass, Mulholland hits Encino Hills Drive, makes a sharp left and turns to dirt. The clearance on the Corvette is low, so Guldstrand turns around, sheathing the car in a cloud of sweet smelling dust. Just as fast, it blows off.

As he passes the racer's landmarks on the way home, it becomes clear how easily Mulholland can enter the bloodstream of those who take the time to learn its grades, its goofiness and curves.

To get out of your car and to stand in the middle of the road on the double yellow line is to feel the heat of the pavement, the enticement of speed, and at the end of the day, as the sun pours its hazy beams through the canyons and tree-lined ridges to the west, you feel the sway of the road long after you've left it.

Carls Turn/ Mid pits

You will notice chute #1 and #2 leading down the hill around Mid pit. This is the path of the "off roaders" and resulting scarring of the earth as they went over the side.

If you look closely at the area circled you can make out at least three or four wrecked cars at the bottom piled on top of each other. One hell of a drop!

These 3 areas highlighted and deadmans would be the obvious area's to search for signs.

And for posterity those tour buses are everywhere and annoying me!

Actually Jeff, what you labeled the "chute" #1, is just past Carls. This is the route that racers would take to "pick yur part" from the cars that crashed below. If you didn't watch your car after going over, it was picked clean by morning. You mentioned 3 or 4 cars there. I saw at least 17 cars at the bottom there, all piled up before the city dredged Carls in the mid 80's. "Midpits" as it was called, is just to the left to where you labeled it. Sorry to contradict you Buddy, just looking for accuracy.

Also, you can look below Deadmans, however it has been picked by hikers because there is a trail below. I've already been there. I know where to look. My hiking boots are on, it's 7 am, and I'm ready to go hiking. "The early bird catches the worm". If anyone want to join the fray, let's rock and roll. I'll be parked in mid-pits by mid-morning.

I wonder if we sponser Mulholland between Skyline and Bowmont and promise to keep it clean, will they let us have that section for racing 3 nights a year if we sign releases.

You know those tour buses that Jeff mentioned, are all over Mulholland, all day. Why do they always stop across from my house and point? How rude.

Did I not say Carl's? I meant to say Carl's. I thought I said Carl's? Wait....."Chute #1 had some erosion from runoff as the pocket at Carls was a waterfall when it rained" So there! na na na na na!

We could just show up with bright orange trash bags and everyone would think we are performing community service? That way we could put spotters along the course and blend in.

There was still one car below Deadman's about five years ago. It was pretty far down the hill by the trail Chris mentioned. Only about half of it remained above ground. Chris there are two branches to the trail....one goes west parallels Mul and the other goes north then west. Somewhere around the split is that car. It's half buried or more by now.

On the buses I think it was Borgnine getting back at Banning!

Late to the party as usual Henry. Your name came up at the annual CRE reunion last weekend in Paso Robles. Where were you? CRE: 36 years and counting! We reunited "Rocky" and "Bullwinkle" who had not seen one another since 1977. We're still here -- the result of lead based paint, recreational drugs, non-filtered cigs, mass quantities of beer, a lack of bicycle helmets, 6 or 8 to a motel room, Jack & Coke, 7 & 7, late night high speed forays across narrow mountain roads, skiing in levi's, occassional lucky youthful sexcapades, full race cars on mountain roads, Policemen with brains and independent thought processing, post bar closing Tommy's Burgers nofries-justchips, 1,000 foot rockets + m-80's on the beach and a life filled with vitality and imagination not seen in so many of today's youth.

I decided to dig around and see what I could find. I went up to Mulholland a little too late today, but I plan on going back again soon.

Hi all,

Well, I really don't know what to say after reading all these posts in this thread. It all started off trying to do a google search of Banning's RSR. Show a buddy here @ work. Little did I know I woudl happen upon one of the greatest internet conversations known to man. I am actually sitting here in awe of the words being written here. Sorry if I am sounding too lofty, but as a kid growing up in LA I had always heard of the goings on up on Mulholland. Now, to hear these stories coming straight from the mouths of the folks that lived these stories is incredible to say the least.

Chris, I would like to thank you for your great book. "The Mulholland Experience" has turned out to be one of my favorite books about Los Angeles. If I can ever buy you a beer, I would love the opportunity, please.

Thanks again to al of you in this thread. I look forward to trading stories in the future.

I spent 3 hours this morning hiking the deer trails that follow Mulholland below the roadway about 100 feet. I found incredible things. From Mid-pits to Grandstands the area just below the racecourse is littered with old bottles, papers, signs, minibikes, cars, car parts, and much more. On the ledge below the Sweeper there is an old jeep. Roads lead to it from the bottom of the canyon and from Mulholland across from Bowmont. I found stripped Porsches, and other cars down from the roadway. I will post photos later. Incredible. I am going back, I saw something that looked special about 300 feet lower.

slodave 12-11-2007 06:17 PM

Chris, do post those pics. I want to see what you found. I talked to Derek earlier and he wants to go as well. I'm not planning on going in the 4:00 hour ever again! That traffic and the long traffic lights drove me nuts!

I parked the Camino at mid-pits around 9:30.

I immediately found signs from days gone by.

I walked down about 75 feet from the edge and found a deer trail. This shot is looking up from the turn just before Carls.

There are rare bottles from the 30's, 40's, and 50's down the hill, and plenty of old beer cans before pop tops. See the triangular holes in the top, the old way of opening beer.

On the ledge below the Sweeper lies this old Jeep. Trails lead to the ledge from the canyon below and from across Bowmont Drive.

I found about 10 signs along the cliff below Mulholland.

I checked the base of the signs that I found and low and behold, they just happened to be cut off with a Hack-Saw. What do you know?

Carls turn has been cemented over with a gaurdrail on top so as to keep the over-steerers on the road instead of over the cliff.

There are parts of cars all over the edge of Mulholland in the Racecourse. However, down below in a very inaccessable area are more cars. They look older, perhaps from the 30's or 40's. I will go down into this area to find them. Anyone care to join me?
