Watching the Daytona 24 hour today. I see a live webshot at :

http://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/news/track_news/543873.html

This reminds me about how so many Mulholland racers went on to excel in endurance races that went through the night. Many were amazed and wondered why so many of us were faster at night than in the daytime.

Carry on.

GO to the drug store and buy "Tecnu" poison oak cleanser. It dissolves the the plant oils in your skin and gets rid of the rash fast. It also stops the stuff from spreading.

What a great thread. :Lovin' the memories.
In the early 80's we used to race Decker Canyon Road at night. What a rush that road was at midnight!

Today it's likely jail, stiff fine and a 30 day impound if not total vehicle forfeiture.

LOL, very true, but you forgot the best part, the beating after being handcuffed. SmileWavy

Although threatened a few times I never did get smacked down myself. Whew! Whittier cops were rough-n-tough in the 70's when I was going to college there. I had the "yes sir, no sir" thing down (survival instinct, not coward - LOL ;-). Back then, we were cutting our teeth on Turnbull Canyon, but never got caught. It was the Whittier Blvd action and drag racing that nearly landed me in a heap of trouble thanks to a very short lived acquaintance with some drag racers and blvd posers. It was the twisties that beckened me anyway.

A couple years later, when I got my SCCA historied TR6 we were specializing in the 110 Pasadena Fwy thanks to some guys that I met while working the sales counter for an Aeroquip shop. They were freeway stormin' racers that were buying hose to plumb their machines and telling me about lighting kill switches and extended WOT runs on a variety of freeways after midnight. It must've been a short time later that I learned about Decker Cyn, having been warned to avoid Mulholland as too crazy of a scene.

It wasn't long before my TR6 melted down and I couldn't afford to fix it & had to sell it. :-( <sniff><sniff> That ended things for a couple more years until 1984 when I bought my 911 and it was back to all the old roads... Decker, 110, Turnbull, Ortega Hwy. But, then the POC took my heart and soul and that's all she wrote. Other than a few Club runs (ala Solvang Stomp type stuff) it's been race tracks for me and my 911.

Bummer or blessing (?) we didn't have incar cameras "back in the day' !!

Great story, thanks for posting it. Most Mulholland racers appreciate Decker Cyn. Rd. also because of it's fun turns and inclines. I wish that I'd had the chance to drive it more often back then. You are fortunate to have experienced Decker when it was a blast to drive on without traffic or any worries like we have today. Cheers.

Special Thanks to Radu

This morning Radu was the honored guest at the Ferrari Owners Club Election Brunch held at the exclusive Jonathan Club in Santa Monica. At the silent auction held at the brunch Radu's beautiful glycee painting of a red Dino Ferrari went for hundreds of dollars.

I want to thank you Radu very much for this contribution to the FOC. It was also a lot of fun to have you and your lovely fiance Kei at the Brunch with us.
Note: They are seated on the left side of the table.

Nope, don't know him
Cool, so we were doin' Turnbull in same era. Those were great times. You were in your MGB?

pdqcarrera 01-27-2008 10:08 PM

Radu, that's some impressive art - I definitely like your style!

I'd love to see what you could do with my white Carrera racer and black 930 streeter in some kind of a contrast scheme. Hmmm, if I put the idea into my wife's head now maybe by Christmas next year... I best start plotting now, huh? LOL!!

Ahh! The paparazzi that hang out in front of Bowmont - are waiting for Britney Spears. TMZ.com has a live feed and it shows the sweeper in front of Bowmont Drive...

"Join us live at 5:00 for breaking news. Newscam Mul will be covering Britney Spears getting into her car live. Neighbor Mischa Barton cowers in fear of being paparazzed after her recent DUI arrest. Bowmont in chaos".

"Hold on folks we have some new information coming in. We are being advised that a quarter century ago guys actually used to race up here on Mulholland Drive..................."

"We have activity at the Spears compound. Back to our headline news.....Britney is opening the door......Britney is lifting her foot to enter the vehicle.....she is now closing the door.......the large SUV is pulling away...........the security gate is opening........the large SUV is driving through the gate...........the gate is closing........"

(pullback- shot of large SUV with dark tinted windows driving off)

Honestly I do actually think the neighbors might prefer us over Britney by now.

I've owned the MGB since August 1970 and yes I took it through Turnbul but most of what you would have seen is a Blue '73 LTRS Camaro w/Nevada plates or an Ice Blue '73 Sport Bug. Mostly I went through there on my way to the 60 freeway to go to Mulholland. I didn't see regulars there very often. Did they only come out late at night?

European Mulholland

This is an awesome short video shot in 1958 at Spa.

Some of the track looks similar to sections of Mulholland.

This was sent to me by Larry O'Rourke. He used to live above the Sweeper in the late 70's and early 80's and would participate in Grandstands regularly.

...

it may look similar, but it is 10 times more wide open at spa. btw it really is amazing seeing f1 cars go flat though eau rouge these days. the tv cameras can't quite capture it.
