Carls

Entering Carls.

Lots of Sunday traffic on Mul as usual.

Just testing the car.

Saw a couple of set up cars going the other direction. Fellow Mul Racers.
I half expected them to turn around for a challenge. Slowed just in case.

Silent Running

When we arrived at Laurel Canyon, the engine died. No fuel left in the tank it seemed.
That's when the laughs really started.

I slapped John on the back and exclaimed, "Just like the old times!" In past days, we coasted to get fuel many times. Nothing like being on top of hill
I was hoping to make it to Wrightwood Drive. It leads to a 76 stn. on Ventura with great prices.

Using the starter to get going, we made a left down Laurel.
About a third of the way down in nuetral we were gaining too much speed.
You can hear me squeel in the turn. Right after that saw a bikecop on other side giving tickets.

Due to Silent Running he didn't even look up, wheww!
Maybe driving a Tesla has it's rewards, right Radu?

We got gas and went right back up the way we came.
Cop still there and he really pointed his Radar Gun on me.
Make sure you smile and wave at the nice officer. SmileWavy

A great day all in all.
More to come.

Renewed interest in Mulholland

Just spent half the day with one of the senior editors of Car and Driver.

Gave tour from Skyline to Dirt Mul while talking about the turn names, history of Mulholland Drive, famous residents, important locations, the Racing Groups, significance of Mul, stuff over the hill, tv and movie relevance, the old days and the new, the importance of Mulholland...and more.

With a little luck, something really cool will happen. I'm crossing my fingers. ;)

Now if Derek and I can get together soon to complete checking car, we are ready to do something unique and fun for everyone.

Stay Tuned

Hmmm. Seems like I keep missing you, Banning. First at the Greystone last week (I left around 1 to pick someone up from LAX), and then today on the Racecourse. Did a test run on the Duck mid-day to check out the charging system.

Just an aside: Derek's not the best of passengers. ;) Though maybe his familiarity with the road will help ease his nerves.

Sorry I missed you at Greystone.

It would have been fun to run with you on Mul, next time. ;)

930's are great 911s in my opinion.

I can tell you this, I owe my life to Dr. Porsche, Goodyear Blue Streaks, and a fast reaction time.

One afternoon sometime around 1980 I was driving The Carrera eastbound from the San Diego Freeway on Mulholland Drive. Visibility was excellent, road conditions were perfect and it seemed no one was around.

I was driving fairly fast, about 7/10's when I passed thru "The Bumps" or "Grafiti" as it is sometimes called. This is an area just east of Roscomare where there is a running wall that gets tagged every so often, it also is an area of very bumpy conditions that can never be repaired due to a active spring coming up from below the road surface.

This area ends at a very sharp, right, blind, very nasty turn with driveways on the north side.

So here I go like some dumb fool blazing without pre-running (one of my personal rules) into this blind turn and...

HOLY CRAPP! Big truck stopped just past the apex waiting for a car to make a left turn into a driveway. I only had a second.

With all my might, down went the brake pedal. Porsche Four-piston alloy calipers gripped the drilled-out Carrera 6 rotors as tight as possible.

It would have locked up probably if it wern't for those amazing Blue Streaks and that would have been the end of me and the famous 911.
The Truck's lift gate was coming up fast and if hit, we would really have a chop top 911..or chopped top with my head included.

But those crazy tires refused to lock. Instead I made a 50 mph to complete stop, IN THE TURN, in about 25 feet distance.
For a nano-second the laws of physics fought a war between who is going to win, the tires or the calipers.

Heavy smoke poured off of the tires and billowed from the wheelwells as I came to a controlled stop.
I was engulfed in a thick cloud of burning tires while my heart pounded heavily.

No one saw me, I was basically alone. The Truck then merrilly went on it's way while I sat recovering from mental stress.

After that learning experience I drove home at 1/10th, said a few thanks, and didn't drive the Carrera for a few weeks.

To this day, I am still appreciatively amazed at how those brakes performed. Thank you again Dr.

Thanks for the story! I love all these great stories that you have to tell! If you don't mind me asking how did you get those brakes?

Also thanks for posting some new pictures of the rsr, it gets better and better looking every time I see it.

Thanks very much.

I bought the brakes from Arnie V. who was the previous owner.
He had the car set up IROC style and was racing it.

In fact I bought his IROC Fuchs as well, 9's and 11's to replace my BBS 11's and 15's.
The big wheels/tires are great for a pro track at over 100mph, but were just too much for the lower racing speeds that Mulholland affords.

The car is actually much faster and safer with the 9 and 11 inch wide wheels.

[QUOTE=Banning;6127991 John's making a personal story about Mulholland that I'm including in the next book.

Night run

Shift linkage adjusted, video camera charged.

Need another road test for next week's meeting with major car magazine.

More gas also. Last run only made it to Shell Station. Need 76 fuel.

Been awhile since we had an evening run.

Derek is riding shotgun. YeeHaaa!

See you on Mul!

Having fun in 2nd gear

Another Adventure.

Car ready with tire pressures checked. After adjusting shift linkage it looked good to go.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310529563.jpg

But soon found out still out of adjustment. More than that.

Dave and Jeremy were correct. My bushings are too loose, and shifting will worsen.
Must replace plastic bushings in Tunnel.

No matter how linkage is adjusted it will not work due to mega play.
Yesterday I had no 2nd gear, now that's all I have, lol

Had fun at Gas Station too, lots of Ventura traffic.
Half way up Beverly Glen, whoops, box of nuetrals, more fun.

No problem, got home lickity split in 2nd once it was found.
It's good to find and work out these small details before it becomes really important.

Thanks TRE, next time I'll follow your advice.
And thanks Derek for joining me in on the fun.

Not Porsche-related, but apparently Tour Master made some motorcycle jackets named after the canyons that feed off Mulholland Hwy. Scroll down to the bottom of the link, if you're so inclined:

Just heard about this on TV:

Cyclists Beat JetBlue Flight in "Carmageddon" Race Challenge

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) -- A group of cyclists beat a JetBlue flight from Burbank to Long Beach in a "Carmageddon" race challenge Saturday.

The race challenge came about when bloggers dared urban bicyclist group "Wolfpack Hustle" to go head to head with a special "Carmageddon" flight from Burbank to Long Beach offered during the weekend closure of a 10-mile stretch of the 405 for $4 one-way.

The six members of the group, who bike 50 to 70 miles every Monday, left at 10:50am Saturday from the intersection of Cahuenga and Chandler for the 38.4-mile ride.

Bicycle blogger Joe Anthony left home at the same time to drive himself to the airport in order to catch the 12:20pm flight.

The flight landed at 1:05pm in Long Beach, where Anthony caught a ride to the finish line at Long Beach Aquarium.

Aside from media and a small group of supporters, the starting line was relatively quiet.
