KoM was shot on Mulholland and in Griffith Park. As the park is closed at night, the roads there were a good place to shoot. Of course the park roads were narrower than the "hill" but with shaky vision, night driving, and speeding up the film made for exciting at the time segments.

Charlie's vette: 1965, big block, lots of Gran sport touches home made of course. Rims were 13 x 15 rear ! with flat sheets of aluminum shaped in the arc of the cut out wells to cover all the extra rubber

Anytime you see a short river rock wall in a scene would be Griffith along with narrower areas. Lots of trees are also the Griffith side.

The early morning drag race was shot on the upper access road before you drop down into the park.

and there was the shots in the race course. Anyone knows about film making and high speed car stunts they usually use markers. Its pretty obvious the orange cones were not props but visible prompts doubling as traffic props.

That's how events become legends.

haromaster87 06-03-2015 07:32 PM

Hey there guys,

My name is Tony, I'm 23, live in Florida, and have never had the pleasure of even laying eyes upon this legendary road that has changed so many lives, and I wasn't even born when it was getting good out there. I'm a car/driving enthusiast through and through who lives in an area where that is few and far between. Furthermore, I'm fairly uninterested in most modern car based motoring. I have endless respect for the efficiency and ease of modern performance vehicles. On paper they are masterpieces of our time, and they are usually pretty fun to drive, in a way. But I find it to be a sterile subject compared to what performance motoring was at one point.

I bring all of this up as even though I'm much younger than most of you guys, I want to emphasize my interest in this classic era of racing. A couple of months ago I stumbled upon the 1978 article that talked about the Porsche and the racing scene and I was hooked. I began pouring through the internet looking for more info about old Mulholland racing and found this thread. I'm only on page 76 at this point, but I had to chime in.

I have the utmost admiration for the path that you guys forged in the days before the mess of society we have nowadays. Back when you had to do things the real way. Building the cars, learning to drive them, no electronic junk, just what you had and what you could do. I can't believe I get to post in the same thread as the legends that, only a couple of months ago, were subjects of articles I was drooling over. True legends of your time. In an area where a couple of friends and I form our local car interest, it is just awesome to read about you guys who did the things you did and managed to make a name for yourself doing so.

I have my 2001 BMW 740il and I have my 1987 Scirocco 16v that I'm slowly adding parts to and making into a proper little performance car. In all of my nostalgic admiration, I am trying to kind of build it as a car that might have hooned around back in the day, maybe like a little Mulholland local. haha I regularly joke about driving it to SoCal after I build my new engine, just to drive it on Mul once. If the resources aligned, I might just be crazy enough to try it.

I know the locations filmed on Mulholland but I'm trying to find the location of the shop that Harry Hamlin and Dennis Hopper worked at in the movie.

Where Papa Johns Pizza is now ( Left edge of image) it the last old building at the location. The Burger king was next to it.

If you look in the 1981 photo looking down the street you will see the brick façade of what is now Papa Johns.

Garage on the right has same configuration as the one in the old Rockford clips. Three stalls and a door on the far right. I'll bet it's the same one and it's been remodeled over the years.

Today I was eating at the In and Out over by Lincoln and drove back down Washington. I stopped and it is the same small building on the right. A coat of paint, a new door, and the awning overhang is now gone. The far right stall is now and office. I get back; see your post and laughed.

Hey guys,

I started a publication that is about to launch online called "Mulholland Magazine" that will feature some cars that have driven Mulholland in the past, current cars that are raced by people on Mulholland, some articles about car setup, following a couple local teams that run circuits and girls riding in fast cars on the hill and at the track. We are also looking to do interviews with time attack teams and some professional racers as well.

I've helped Chris on a few cars now for maybe a year or two and wanted to do something to keep the scene alive. You can find some videos and pictures (as well as some late night antics) on my instagram page:

https://instagram.com/mulholland_magazine/

So far I've shot a few cars, but would like to continue to grow this into something that really shows unique cars that are driven fast. I don't want to be boring like many of the car magazines and just talk about specs. Anyway, check it out and let me know if you guys like some of the cars. Here is a photo of my arrest report from when I was 19 and got busted by Operation Safe Canyon:
